Volvos in Hawaii

Post by IceScrewball »

I'm moving to Hawaii in a couple months, and have been looking at the practicality of shipping my S80 vs. selling and buying a used Volvo when I get there. Problem is...I don't see very many used (or new for that matter) Volvos for sale on the island. Does anyone know if they are a rare sight on Oahu? Also, does this mean that I will be paying an arm and a leg for work on the car (even more than the already high price of everything in Hawaii)? I don't know if I could live with not having a Volvo.

I'm sure parts can get shipped anywhere - but at what expense? Might be worth a phone call to FCP etc to get an idea.

I have had the pleasure of writing back and forth to a few Volvo enthusiasts and they seem to all say that parts and Volvo mechanics are rare. For some reason the Hawaii crew seems to be extremely resourceful. One gentleman here is driving his 240 with no lower front main bearing. (May it run that way forever!!!).

I would not ship a problem Volvo out there.( Don't ship something you are trying to restore) If you face trans issues etc I would ship a different one unless I knew I could get the parts sent.

DOHC Volvo head questions

The upper is head on by studs and nuts. To separate the upper from lower head, you must remove the outer rows of cam saddle nuts and the three down the center. Then you can pull the upper.

From there you you can get to the head bolts. Watch when you lift the upper head off as all the cam buckets will fall out of their bores.
