Had my transfer case fail, bought a used one and had it put on. Bolted right up but the rear drive shart was popping. Removed the rear shaft and much better but the front is straining. The transfer case is perfect match.

I understand there are two types: 1:2.62 and 1:3.31. Which one do I need and how can I figure out which one I have?

thanks

If there are no markings on the casing thats a tough one.

You can rotate the input shaft on both transfer casings and measure the output rotation which should match either of the 2.6 or 3.3 available.

Vida may list a specific transfer case according to VIN. If you PM your VIN to me I can take a look.

Simple solution is to leave the drive shaft out.
The car will be a FWD vehicle.

2000's use the 1:3.31 unit. 2001 and later all are 1:2.62 ratio.

front wheel drive looks like the current solution. Car runs and drives nice especially above 15 mph. Car seems to struggle in low gear or higher torque, like going up hills. This is evident because I live on a hill. Have more strain/vibration when starting out.
Perhaps this is just what a tranny with 125K feels like.

if mine is supposed to be 1:3.31 and I have a 1:2.62 that means I am loading down my engine/tranny and would account for a shudder at startup?

:!: :!: :!: Wouldn't an incorrect transfer case also mis-distribute power between left and right front wheels, since it splines in after the trans final drive? It would tear stuff up pretty quick, I would think. :!: :!: :!: Duh, never mind, split ratio is probably only to reduce driveshaft speed or torque, and then reversed at VC and rear diff. Guess it's time to look into that system

No the internal differential in the auto trans handles left and right FWD power distribution. The transfer case spins at the same speed as the left axle when not turning a corner.

You need to remember that AWD is provided ONLY from the RIGHT axle.

The ratio in the transfer case is the difference between front axle and propshaft rotation.

So an "incorrect" transfer case would be fine, as long as the propshaft was removed; but you could not restore the AWD, unless you either "correct" the front case, or swap in the appropriate rear diff, if they will interchange.

Will the P2 XC rear differential swap into a P80 XC?
