older volvos

Post by volvosteve »

Hi My name is Steve
I have a 1964 red PV 544. I inquired a few days ago about setting up a Forum for the older models and Matt was quick to respond. I have had my 544 for over 32 years but it has not been licenced for many of those years. I am happy to say that My restored baby is "on the road again". I have asked a few friends to check out the site so I hope it will stir up some interest in the older Swedish Iron.

Very cool, Steve! Welcome aboard!
Do you have a picture or two of your 544? Would love to see what she looks like.

Hi,

Trying to get a post n to this new forum for old volvos. I have had my 1964 p210 since 1990. In 1998 it was the crusher or shop to fix. Well 8 years later it is "fixed".

Steve are you driving to Carlisle?

Hi Steve,

Carlisle would be about 10 hrs in my car and there is no chance of my husband partaking in that kind of adventure in the old girl......

If we go I will trailer. Still not 100% sure trip is in the cards for us.

You are the one who had red 544 in Lake Placid correct?

I think I am having ignition coil issues. Need some warmer days to test out for sure. Seems when car warms up for 20-30 min it has tendency to cut out and not start again until cool. happened once in Dec doing errands on a nice day around town and had to come home on ramp truck :(

Then I had it out last weekend just to run in driveway for a while and I shut it off after running about 15-20 min to find it would not start an hour later. After pushing it back to garage down our driveway (long hill ) I could not make turn to get inside so I had to stop. I figured give it a shot... it started right up. Once in garage I stopped and started several times.... Need good weather to investigate more. Turning over fine. Did not see any moisture on plug wires or dist cap. I had both off several times.

Yes mine was the red 544 parked next to yours in Lake Placid.
Is your car 6 volt or converted to 12? If it is 12 volt you could consider going to a Crane solid state ignition system (you can get it from IPD for around $120.) that would take some of the load off the coil. If not check inside the cap for cracks (they wll look like fine lines ) and check the posts inside the cap too , if they (the posts) are cruddy looking you can use a pocket knife to scrape the crud off. This crud is the transfer of material from the rotor. if the car starts and runs better, you should replace the cap and rotor. If the wires are origonal Volvo, the will be copper core and will not be the problem . I hope that helps.
