FWIW, My S70 had a slight ticking noise at operating temp from the lifters when I bought it. The PO used synthetic oil but had a no name filter. Before I did an oil change, I added 1L of Transmission fluid and drove the car for 15 minutes. (I don't believe in harsh chemicals, ATF has detergents but isn't harsh).
After the oil change with Quaker State Dino Oil 10W30 and Fram Filter (yes Fram, because I get one free oil change per year with my roadside assistance and it has an anti-drain back valve so I'm not worried), the car has been dead silent. You can use the ATF fluid from your Power Steering when you do a flush; it is relatively clean.

I just bought an '03 V70 w/ "blown motor" (dirt cheap) from neighbor.
Oil was on the stick but very dark. Dropped the (very dirty) oil, then dropped the pan (very easy on this car).
# rod bearing is gone. Several folks have told me not to fix it but replace it. I'm going in that direction.
Several have said that used motors from crashed cars are a good bet.

Teenage boy drove this car. He can't spell "oil". Nor did he care to learn.
Dad got him another car (to misuse). A shame.
