93' 940 non-turbo Catalytic Converter

Hello All,
I went to my shop and they told me that my exhaust issue (loudness) originated from a hole in the catalytic converter. Now, I'm in school and do not want to pay $1000 or so for my loud car to get fixed. Is there another way such as an after market converter?
