01 Volvo V70 T5 Wagon - front suspension dropped 1"

Post by rubbersidedown »

My left (driver side) front suspension has dropped about 1". I checked the arms, spring, rubber parts etc. Everything checks out nicely and the pesky rubber spring seat that often breaks was changed not too long ago, so I know very well what happens if that one is busted, so it is not that. The shock shows no oil leak, but I think if feel a slightly more sway and front wheel tracking while driving. All of this obviously points to the shock and that it lost its gas pressure making the front left to sag, but before I open up the wallet can someone please chime in if they share this experience. Thanks!

This is shock. I'd change the whole front suspension.

Forgive me if you have already covered this but in my experience generally, not Volvo specific, is to look at the upper strut mounts right there with the hood open. If one is giving out the shaft will be sticking up higher by the amount you are lower and it should be obvious.

I gained a good inch + in my 1999 v70 T5 wagon when I redid all four corners earlier this year. I think I documented the measurements in a thread.

It sure is nice with a tight new suspension.... :D

deadmerida - definitely not the rubber strut mounts (spring seats). When they go the front suspension bangs when you drive over pot holes, and you are right the shock piston, as seen in the engine compartment, sticks up if you rhythmically start to push down on your front fender and get the suspension in motion.

The sagging by an inch must be from the shock loosing its gas pressure - I think abscate confirms that.
Thanks!

I replaced struts in my '02 without having any oil leak and the 'bounce test' seemed to be fine. But it made a huge difference - at that age it's a worthwhile investment IMHO if you might keep the car even another year or two. Previously the car felt like it might bottom out going out of driveways etc, which was gone with updated struts.

Here's a video (skip to 23s mark) of me compressing my old strut with just my hand:

My struts and springs were original, 16 years 160,000 miles old.

I also tow boats with this car....brutal.

coflynn - I like your vid. You are actually almost at the same latitude as the Volvo factory. :)
