1996 Volvo 850 GLT Need torque specifications

1996 Volvo 850 GLT Need torque specifications

Hi Guys,
Do you know torque specifications for the following:?

1. Starter motor to engine body bolts
2. Alternator to engine body bolts
3. Power steering pump bracket bolts
4. AC compressor to engine body bolts

I can't find this information anywhere.

fasteners you list are not special torque spec bolts. The spec will the standard spec for that size bolt. From memory: 10 mm shank (starter) 37lb-ft, 50 n-m
8mm; 15 lb-ft, 22 n-m

Normally no one torques those fasteners. Those are hard to get a torque wrench on with an adequate swing to get click type yield.
Practice to develop the "feel" for those torques on fasteners in easy access spots. You would never find a professional tech torquing those.

Torques are more a product of

1) Material I'm bolting to whether aluminium or steel or plastic

2) Depth of thread insertion

3) Size of thread

4) Whether bolts will be subjected to extra vibration (on engine or suspension) or just panel bolts.

You DO develop a feel for what is required over the years and sometimes it's some common sense involvement also

1. Starter motor to engine body bolts -- No spec in Haynes. Chilton spec for starter bolts = 34 Nm.

2. Alternator to engine body bolts -- No spec in Haynes or Chilton.

3. Power steering pump bracket bolts -- Haynes spec for Steering Pump guard plate = 25 Nm, and for Steering Pump mounting bolts = 25 Nm. Chilton spec for pump bolts, cover plate bolts, lower attachment are all 25 Nm.

4. AC compressor to engine body bolts -- No spec in Haynes or Chilton.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

There are SAE and DIN (JIS, ISO, etc. for that matter) default spec for bolt shank-thread pitch bolts of different grades for "normal" usage. Volvo has a torque chart in pocket data books for torques for bolts not specified specificly. All those in this post are those bolts. The bell housing bolts of the same shank size as starter bolts carry the same torque. The compressor, p/s pump, alternator bolts are all "normal" usage and will the broad use torque chart. Those same shank bolts holding rod cap to connecting rod body would be a special torque.

These would not be special high strength, fine thread, or torque to yield one-time use bolts (for that reason, sometimes one-time use is due to pre-applied locking compound that is not effective for a second use---confusing)
