My son just purchased a low mileage 2007 XC70 on my recommendation. He bought from the second owner and it has always been serviced by the dealer.
He has had it for 1 week and this morning the ignition key will not turn past position II.
Any ideas?

We tried that first thing. Usually when that is the cure the key won't turn at all. In this case it turns normally to position II but will not go to position III (starter contact). When in position II dash lights are on, radio and heater work etc. The only thing not working is the headlights.

He finally had it towed to the dealer and they said bad ignition lock. These things are unique to each vehicle and have to be ordered from Germany and cost $500. You would think something that expensive could last at least the first 100k miles. His total cost for the first 2 weeks of owning a Volvo will be something over $600 plus towing, 50+ miles.
Does anyone know what year they started using this anti theft ignition lock? I hope my 2004 XC70 doesn't have it.

According to http://www.drive2.ru/b/4899916394579114951/ (google translate it) you can remove steering wheel lock part.
