I have a car with a blower fan on the blink and will not be able to touch it until Sunday afternoon, so looking for some parts info in advance, couldn't find it in a search.
Has anyone actually checked: can you interchange the ECC blower motor resistors (the power stage) between an 850 and 98 x70?
I know the parts sellers specify different part numbers, but offhand they look similar on the web pages so I'm wondering if they are really different or not. For example, most parts pages say the blower motors are different between 850 and early x70s, but in fact the motor itself is totally interchangeable.
Has anyone actually checked, or have two in hand to compare? I have a spare from an 850 in the garage, but have never pulled one from an x70.

In my experience last year, they seem to be part # specific.
I had maybe 7 or 8 to chose from, but only the specified number seemed to function.
The OBD I flash codes had even indicated as much.

So this afternoon I had three of these ECC power stages out, and compared them side by side:
- one from a 96 850
- two from 98 cars (S70 and V70).
All shapes and connections are identical. Unfortunately I didn't have time to compare/check function and swappability because I quickly learned that in fact the blower motor was the problem that prompted all these questions in the first pace. So I replaced the blower motor in the V70 and buttoned it back up.
Thanks Ben850, good to know what others are seeing with this. I wonder if there could be multiple outcomes, I will test a swap too. I will eventually try out the 850 power stage in the S70 and report back, that may be a few weeks though ...

Oh yes, I had ran through combinations of power stage, ECC, J-relays...
I did finally rebuild my Bosch motor. You have to lubricate the bearings as well as breaking in the brushes before re-installation.
I would say good for another ten years. Ha.
1998 and later are Delco $29. so you know. Do not be fooled.
My issues, on this one were a result of the previous owner being a creative electrician.
There are still a few ghosts in the machine.
For the most part, I only have to re calibrate my recirculation air motor after replacing the broken actuator arm.
Least of my worries at this point. I have brought a '98 XC home yesterday with more hoops to jump through.
