98 C70 - is it just a sport S70?

Post by obayha »

Can anyone shed some light on the c70 model or is it just a sport s70?
Not much info on this one, but any thoughts on cost would help.
I have asked for other pictures and have not heard back yet.

It has less than half the mileage of mine and I need to start looking. Would like to stay in the same year, as I can work on them a little.
Thanks
Shane

BIL has a 2000 C70 convertable. Aside from the obvious, two doors and rag top, it is like working on a 850, S70 or V70. The two things that bother me about this car is the turn radius and the rear view mirror image is poor. I doubt the coupe has the poor stiffness of the convertable.

Buy it!
I just bought a 1998 C70 Coupe in October. It is my first venture into the world of front wheel drive Volvos. I still have a 1992 240 wagon that my teenage son is now driving.

I have not driven a S70 so I do not know exactly how they compare. My understanding is that they are identical from the dash forward.

My C70 Coupe turning radius is terrible, especially when compared to the 240 wagon. However I have adapted quickly to it.

I love the way my C70 Coupe drives and handles. The previous owner of my car lowered the suspension with some sport springs and replaced the struts and shocks.

The Coupe accelerates very quickly. I've never driven a turbo before. I am currently getting 19.4 mpg in suburban Washington, DC/Baltimore.

The price for the C70 in that Craigslist advertisement is good. I paid $2,750 for mine with 115,000 miles.

Buy it quick. I love looking at my car as I walk up to it. Very attractive looking vehicle.
It is worth checking that the Air Conditioning works well. Check the functionality of the electric seats and the windows. Make sure the windows snug up tight when the doors are closed. Since there is no frame around the window, the glass needs to fit tight with the rubber molding around the roof/door opening.

Did I mention that I love my C70 Coupe and am so happy I bought it?

Buy it. Quick.

They are both just less utilitarian variants of the V70  running gear is same, some chassis differences, front seats have flip down levers to access rear seat. Front spoiler is different, from windshield back, body differs. Powertrain options similar, LPT or HPT, like GLT or T-5, some with sticks.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Did you buy it yet?
Did you drive it yet?
Offer $2,500 and you will be so happy.
Such a lovely car. If you have little kids, drive lots of people around, or need cargo space, then this Coupe is not for you.
If you just need a cool looking Volvo, get it now!

Went to look at it yesterday. Seats did not move, smoke test shows possible PCV problem, sweet smell with heat on, looks better in the pictures. Timing belt done at 84,000 and 152,000, not sure of the water pump.
Some guy came by as I was looking at it and asked if we were having problem, owner told him I was looking to purchase, so as I was leaving he was looking at it.
For the age, it wasn't in bad shape, but lacked love. Owner had it 11 years, was daughters college car, she has moved on to another car.
I sent him an email, but no return message yet. Was short on time, so I did not drive it. If he writes back, I will drive and offer him a price.

Phils850r just posted regarding seats in the last couple weeks, mechanically, it's just another P-80, evaluate the problems just like you would an S or V.
