2005 XC90 T6, advice needed, interested in buying one

Post by bulldogjay »

I have found a 2005 XC90, single owner, 94000 miles, good price. The vehicle is in good condition, needs some minor things done to it. I have seen a lot of info on transmission issues that concern me. It also will need a timing belt and other belts replaced.

What else should I consider before buying?

On the T6 engine XC90s, the transmission fails every 50000 miles or so. Good chance the owner is already on the second transmission, and it's getting rid of the car before it fails again.

However, all other engine models have reliable transmissions on this vehicle.

Check the stability relay in the floor under the amp under the passenger seat, they tend to get wet because of sunroof drain clogs, and the relay is about $500. Also, it takes out your stability control and all-wheel-drive. I think it affects ABS also. Alarm siren circuit will affect sunroof operability. It's only $200.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Stay away from T6 Like oragex said transmissions go every 50k... Volvo determined them to have a 100% failure rate.
