'99 V70 Key Needed

Need a key for the wife'scar. It is a '99 so I believe there's a chip in it. Anybody know where they can be had at a reasonable price.

I can get you one at a fairly reasonable price (so can you at Tasca), but you still need to bring it to a dealer for software and "labor" to have it mated to the car

The key is cheap but with the download and the labor you are looking at close to $200.00.

Some enterprising programmer needs to come up with a way to just turn the immobilizer off. That is a fairly common procedure for many other cars but I haven't seen such a service or procedure for the Volvo immobilizer.

So my dealer says $39.95 for the blank, $28.23 for software and 1 hour of labor at $132, plus 7% sales tax. Ugh.

Do you have an old key that you can move the chip over from, there are DIY threads about that, or need a new one altogether?

Erik -- Here's the deal. We had two keys for the car. One was mine and one was the Mrs.' Her key has gone missing -- like for weeks now -- and she's been using mine. I'm not compulsive about having a key to her car on my keyring, but I do think that, generally, it is best to have more than one key for a vehicle, so, in essence, I am inquiring about a "spare" key.

Cheapest is having her key cut at a local locksmith for let's say $10, use it only to open the car.
Of course, use the correct key to start the engine.

Soon or later, you will find the other key (look under the sofa etc.), i.e., the "usual" places where the keys fall into...

I understand the issue has been discussed many times here, but I wonder if there is a Ghetto way to start the car, such as removing the electrical ignition switch (LH of the steering column) and use a screwdriver to start.

Over my head here but I remember a post that Lee said something about taping the chipped key in the housing so it could be seen by the car. Then would'nt a $10.00 cut key start the car due to the taped hidden key providing chipped information for the car?

There's another way which is to remove the chip from your key (small triangular shaped device) and silicon/tape it close to ignition ring and then get as many keys cut as you like !! :mrgreen:
