I bought the Autel MaxiDiag EU 702 awhile ago and just tried using it for the first time. With key off, after plugging into OBD II socket menus come up right away. After selecting Volvo > Petrol (tried SRS and other options on that menu also), and trying the various model options, I'm getting the error message: Autel is not communicating with vehicle control unit".
Is there are trick to using the Autel that I'm not grasping?

On my 96 the car had to be running to communicate. Also make sure your cig lighter fuse isn't blown out.

The printed box the Autel came in lists 96 Volvo and later, all that have OBD II so I'm thinking it should work.
Matty, the cig lighter? Does that affect the OBD II socket? More info?

I see the same thing with the EU102, the engine must be running in which case it works great. I use it on all of my Volvos (95-98). No experience with the cig lighter fuse.

Erik, Matty, others,
Not to be picky, but do you have the EU 102 or 702? Mine is the 702. I'm just wondering if there's any difference. I did start the engine and ran the reader through the menus a couple of times, but continued to get the "not connecting to controller" message.
I didn't hot-plug the reader into the OBD II with the engine running? Should that make a difference?
What specific settings do you choose for the vehicle type? My reader doesn't list the 850 per se. And other specific settings?
Thanks!

I have that scanner and mine only works when I select the generic OBD II option, and it doesn't link when select the Volvo menu.

I sell these over here in Oz and out of perhaps 15, I suplied a faulty one that had to be returned. It had the same error as yours.
Try it on another car using EOBD menu. It should at least pick up engine and trans ECUs even if not connected to a Volvo.
