2000 s70 key keeps turning in ignition
I have an s70 and at times the key keeps tuning in the ignition. To make it catch I need to "wiggle" the steering wheel. It has to be changed. What is an inexpensive fix for this?

I had the same thing happen to my 2000, I fought with my ignition daily for about a year before I eventually had to replace the switch, I paid 350 at the dealer so the key would stay the same as those keys have the transponder in them.

Changing the cylinder can be a bit difficult since Volvo uses screws that, by design, break off after they are installed. We have a couple of tutorials on changing the cylinder in the repair database.

Getting a properly keyed replacement cylinder is indeed the best way to go since the cost of getting keys cut and programmed for a used cylinder will exceed the cost of the correct part and the labor to change the cylinder is all the same. Even if you get a used cylinder with keys the car won't start due to the chipped keys that need to be "married" to the rest of the car. They can't read the codes from a used key to change the programming to your car.
There are ways around that but then you wind up with a different key for the doors and the ignition and if there are two different chipped keys on the key ring the car tends to not run.

Even with new Volvo cut keys you have to be careful. I had a new key cut as I had to sacrifice one chipped key to allow a Viper remote start/security system to fit. The new key just spins in the lock. Ended up having to take the car back to the Viper installer to swap it with the 'good' old key as all I needed was a working chip position. Volvo did offer to replace it. New key just spun in the lock mechanism. When I looked at the key new key it was cut slightly off on one side.
Good Luck,
Neil.
