98 S90 good ole PNP issues

Post by Frogestil »

I got a 98 S90 just purchased. Yup i got the P0705 code and flashing arrow and flashing lights at the mode selector. I did drive the car up on the car dolly to bring it home but its stuck in 4th and will go down to third when i shift it to L. Well it seems to. I didnt get the car to any speed to get it on the dolly so im not sure if the speedo is workin correctly. The car is deffinatley stuck in third or fourth gear. I replaced the PnP but the wires on the car side of the harness are not in the plastic holder. I got a wire diagram when i replaced the PnP to make sure the wires were in the right spot. I feel prety good about having those right but not 100%. I mounted the switch and the flashing lights didnot go away. It has a bad battery so i didnt think about disconnecting it to clear the code. I did clear the code with my scanner though. Also, when i adjust the switch, it will start a few times in park but once put in neutral it wont, then when put back in park, it wont start. So i left the wires hooked up and just pulled the switch. If i put the switch in positions manually it works fine, park and neutral. I would really like to know a few things, do i have to disconnect the battery to clear this code even if i cleared it with my machine? If the tranny is in park and the switch is in park, wired but not mounted, should the lights quit blinking? Does anyone know the color sequence from the car harness to the switch, some are different colors on my diagram. I know the old pnp was bad cause i took it apart and one of the springs for the contacts was broken and the contact wasnt touching anything. Ive spent hours playing with this switch and adjustin it and reading tons of forums. Are there any voltage values on a multimeter i should be lookin for? I dont have a book but im very mech inclined. I havent done a short to ground test yet nor have i done a volt drop test on the switch wires. But i dont know what values to look for anyway. Is this a 12 volt switch vs a 5 volt reference on a sensor. It is a switch. My wire diagram is not that easy to follow but doesnt show where the other end of these wires goto a tcu either and i wouldnt know where thats located anyway. Im kinda lost here as i scratch my noggin. If i could get some yes or no answers to most of these questions and maybe a few links to point me in the right direcion would be sooper appreciated. Thanks

I had the same troubles....I had the PNP switch replaced. The mechanic, who specializes in Volvos, said that the PNP switch itself was not likely the problem (but since he was there, easy enough to replace).
My shifter was really loose and sloppy...He said the bushings on the shifter linkage were completely worn out...and that was likely the problem because of it not lining up properly....!

Hope this helps...

Ya know, my bushings were gone on both sides of the link rod from the shifter to the tranny too. I didnt mention that because i fixed that and still have this issue. Thanks for the reply. Did it fix your issue?

I don't know for sure....because the bushings and the PNP switch were replaced at the same time, so maybe one or the other (or both) solved the problem....
