Hey guys. I'm on winter break from school and intend to replace my PCV system in the upcoming weeks. I've had smoke since August, when I removed the flame trap, and have had pressure in the system for several months (glove test). I currently have the dipstick slightly open with a paper towel around it to prevent junk from getting in. I didn't want to have any problems in the thousand mile trip from school to home :D Just a few questions for you guys:
1.) Does anyone know of a good guide for the NA PCV overhaul? I've stumbled across awesome instructions for the turbo, but have found little to nothing for the NA.
2.) I went outside to take a quick look at the oil trap a few hours ago. Attached is a picture of a hose directly to the left of the separator, which clearly is both torn and disconnected. Does anyone have an idea what that tube is for?
3.) What's the best/most affordable place to purchase the PCV kit? I'll order it today or tomorrow, as I need to have it done by the first week of January.
4.) Any other advice? Across the three of us working on the repair, we shouldn't have much of a problem, but I figure there's probably some tips you guys have.
5.) What's up with the smoke coming from the dipstick following the PCV repair? Should I purchase the enlarged hose beforehand?

Seeing that you are in NJ, I would get the kit from FCP. Use the turbo instructions you see, just don't worry about the turbo parts, i.e. PTC. You also will NOT have the tube that goes around the motor, just to the flame trap. Clean out the ports and replace the parts and don't worry about smoke, worry about pressure.

The kit from FCP is a mix bag!
Pick and choose what you want.

The bottom line:
- Generic heater hose
- Re-use oil trap.

Any reason to go with FCP over IPD? From what I remember, the FCP kit was ~260, and the IPD kit was ~195.

READ the thread link above. This has been discussed many times.
Your cost should be about $60 if you read the thread above. using Volvo OEM parts.

Hey guys, does anyone know the difference between part 9146756 and 1271650? Both are oil traps, and both FCP and IPD says 9146756. When I spoke to FCP, they said that I actually need 1271650. Neither FCP or IPD sell 1271650, yet they both sell 9146756 in their kits. The engine cutoff was around 3xxxxx, whereas my engine has serial 738604. It's a 96 850 auto, non turbo

EDIT: Initially, an FCP rep told me that they were NOT inter compatible. I then spoke to 2 volvo dealerships, one of which game me the 914, and the other gave me the 127. I then spoke to IPD, and the rep told me he's heard of this before, and that the 914 should work fine on my car, which should take the 127. On speaking to FCP one more time, I asked the rep to talk to their parts guy, who said the 914 should be okay. I ordered the fcp kit - hopefully they were right!

This is a known issue that is usually overlooked in the forum discussions: there are two different shaped oil traps. Either trap will bolt up just fine to your engine, and will even work as long as you keep in mind that each uses a different small hose. If you buy a kit, the hose should be matched up to the trap properly and you will be fine.

I discussed this a bit at the end of this thread https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... p?p=351093.

Oil trap 9146756 must be used with elbow hose 1271771, note it is straight

Oil trap 1271650 uses a different elbow hose, 1271653, note it is angled

Thanks for the proper clarification. Hopefully with 2 day shipping, it should be here in time for the weekend. Rather frustrating that two FCP guys gave me two different answers. I really liked the sales rep over at IPD. He knew EXACTLY what he was talking about, and clearly had helped people with this problem before. I'd have purchased the kit from IPD, although the FCP kit was cheaper and had all the proper parts (sans the injector seals, oil dipstick seals, and oil cap seals). I guess I'll have to pick up one of the tools to clamp the oetiker clamp. I'm not at all an advanced mechanic, so thankfully the 96 NA doesn't have the PTC or the EGR :D

I hope it works well for you. The PCV kit IPD sent me was wrong. Had wrong hoses, some were cheap substitutes packed loose in a box. They kept re-sending me hoses. When I was about to do the job, I realized that the main hose from oil trap to intake was not there, instead they put in some cheap hose who knows what that was made of or who made it. I returned the whole thing back to IPD. It delayed my work. To do the PCV work, one needs to pull the part numbers from VIDA and order the exact hoses needed for the engine serial number, not a kit with 5 extra hoses with two important missing or incorrect. Research and getting the correct, high quality parts for the best price is 60-70% of the work effort for someone who hasn't done much work on the car. Rushing and not doing your own research ends in tears:) when the parts don't fit and the manifold is off the car. In my opinion, the planning work at the "drawing board" is more important than wrenching.
