G'day, I have an automatic 2002 V40 that is giving me some grief - actually a lot of grief but I am only going to raise one of the issues at the moment. :) The car has 150,000 km on it.

At times while driving at a steady speed (could be anywhere between 60 kmh and 120 kmh) the car starts to struggle and loses power. I can put the accelorator flat to the floor but the engine struggles, sputters and slowly dies. If at this time I put it into neutral the revs drop steadily all the way down and the motor stops. This is the not the issue I am wanting to raise - I am still working on this one and still have some things left to check.

The issue is after the motor stops it sometimes will not restart. All power connections at position 1 and 2 on the ignition work but turning that last bit to activate the start gives nothing. I have found that if I remove the fuse for the ignition circuit (the big green 40 amp one) and put it back in, the car will start and run again.

Any suggestions as to what the culprit might be that a power reset like this gets it working again?

Have you checked the battery terminal connections and the ground connection.
A battery cable may be corroding or splitting under the external insulation causing poor connection.

It would appear the issue is the gear position sensor (it is an auto). If I row the gear lever back and forth a few times and then leave it in P or N it will start.

On a related note I have finally figured out what the issue was with the car loosing power and cutting out when trying to idle. :) :) :) Now that it is running and not cutting out anytime it feels like it I can hand the car over to the wife again to drive. Will create a new thread with the details of what the issue was and what I have done to address it.
