So it's 2-below zero here in sunny, balmy Omaha.

This morning my 2002 XC70 fired up like it's 50 degrees. My Chevy Truck, with summer-weight oil, fired like nobody's business.

But my '99 V70 absolutely would NOT start without starting fluid. This is not something new. Since I've had it, it will NEVER start if the temperature is below zero. Never.

It runs perfectly other than that. No codes. Regularly gets 27-29 mpg on the road. New fuel filter about a year ago. Proper PSI on the fuel rail. I'm fastidious about maintenance, etc. It's actually a fantastic car that is in excellent condition.

But when it's below zero, it acts as though there is no fuel. It will NOT start.

Any ideas?

What do you mean by "starting fluid"...start spray?

If he car starts with it,ignition system is ok and working and the problem is the lack of fuel.

When you squirt this spray into intake and the engine starts, and if it will not start without it,it means that the engine have nothing to ignite, and that would be fuel. The reason could be that injectors are not getting power, fuel pump relay, tdc sensor...or their wiring/connections.

Did you actually test for fuel pressure at the rail BEFORE using this spray and before even try starting the engine? If not,try it.

Does the fuel pump prime the fuel when you turn the key in pos.II?

Also...when you squirt this spray and start the car...does it start and turn off or it's continuing to run?

Hi Jeff, Two times now on the 98 V70 and the 94 850 I had fuel relays that fail in cold weather. They would cause a no start condition. After several and numerous cranks they would operate. I speculate that vibration brings them to life. I would swap out the relays between the cars and see if the problem follows the relay.

Thank you! That is exactly what it acts like. I've actually got a new one "just in case." Sounds like this might be a prime opportunity to try it.
Fortunately, during several trips to the local U-Pull-It yards, I've grabbed some fuel pump relays. I figure that for $5 it's worth the gamble.

I replaced the fuel pump relay. This morning it was 3-below zero, and the car started immediately as if it was 50 degrees.
Edit: It was well below zero again this morning (Monday) and the car started right up.
