1999 S70 Broken Hood Latch

Post by bmdubya1198 »

I have a broken hood latch on my '99 S70. I changed the heater core yesterday, and it is in need of coolant. Is there any other way of opening the hood? I really need to get in there, and I can't seem to get to the actual cord inside of the black tubing on the release cable.
How can I open the hood without the cable?

Search forum for "LEFT turn signal trick". Basically pull the left turn signal assembly out and you will find the secret place to pull.

On the issue of hood cable, I wrote a DIY as below:

Both. Although I am able to pull up the passenger side of the hood a little more, I still think that it's latched.

Thank you for the link... I'll have to look more into the turn signal trick. I saw something about it earlier, but from what I've seen, you need to have the hood opened to remove the left turn signal assembly.

No,

LH turn signal assembly simply pull straight out (toward the front of the car).
Wear rubber gloves to give you traction.

I tried to pull it out, and I ended up breaking the lens off on the side. It'll just pull straight out?

It pulls straight forward toward the front of the car. You should have consulted your owner's manual where it tells and shows how to remove it for changing bulbs. On an S70 it's held by a prong with a clip that has to be depressed from behind (under the hood) to release it. So nevertheless, something was going to break. It doesn't just wedge in there and pull out from outside the car.

Look at it this way, a new lens is cheaper than running your car too low on coolant/never raising your hood again. :(

Looking at the manual would have been a good idea... don't know why I didn't think of that.

This is actually my cousin's car, I'm the European car guy in the family, and he's the American car guy. He doesn't seem to want to take my advice, and just yells about how American cars are much more simple. He tried pulling it out with a screwdriver, which is how we broke the lens. He's pretty mad now, because that just one more thing he needs to pay for, and it's his brother's car. Now I need to convince him to change the hood release cable himself rather than pay the local Volvo shop $100 plus parts to do it.

Oh well, he'll take my advice eventually.
