98 v70 non turbo value

My daughter wants to buy my 98 v70. Its a southern car with 130K, ZERO rust and everything works (if you can believe it). It really doesn't need anything that I can't fix myself (routine mantenance issues) before I turn it over to her. I have repaired essentially all of the common items that fail so I expect that this will be good transportation for at least another 70,000 miles.

The experience of buying the car and taking care of it will be good for her so I am not interested in giving it to her. I will give her a good deal. Anyhow I've sold a lot of cars and know that what a car is worth whatever someone will pay. That said, I'd like to know roughly what others its worth so i can give her a good deal. The book value is essentially meaningless in my opinion when a car gets this old and that's why I'm asking for opinions. Any comments will be helpful thanks.

It has a brand new oem radiator and heater core with hoses an good Michelin tires with half the tread remaining.

If you sell to a stranger, then it is about $2,000.

Since you are selling to your daughter, I am thinking $500, and I am speaking as a father (I have kids too).

In my opinion, you have to charge her enough to make it sting so she will cherish and take care of the car, but not too much that leaves her budget-less to fix whatever that will break.

You're her father, you know where that point is.

Car prices and values are very regional but in my area I would say you are looking at between $1,100 to $1,300 as a Craigslist value on the car. I see some cheaper and some more expensive than that but their conditions vary. If I were selling the car that you described that is about where I would price it to sell within a couple of weeks of listing it on CL.

Somehow this thread got posted twice, sorry folks. This thread is the original one.

I agree that I don't want to charge her too much. However, she's not 16 years old. I bought this car when she was in high school for her to use about six years ago. I told her that "it was my car that I let her drive". I've paid for tires, gas, oil, insurance, etc for the last six years. I am also her free mechanic who supplies free parts.

She is an adult now and she has never appreciated the car or my efforts so recently I told her I was selling the car and she could buy it if she was interested. She also has the option to buy my 09 Sonata which is much more reliable but much more expensive.

$2000 is about what I figured its worth, but any other comments regarding approximate worth would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depends what you are trying to do here. I bought my first car, a 1968 VW squareback, from my folks for $1. At that point, it was a non-runner that had been sitting in their garage with a non-functioning reverse gear for a while. I got it running and paid I think around $900 to get the transmission fixed.

Can't give you a price without knowing more. How old is she? Is she repaying school loans, does she have a decent job, is she saving for a house, etc.?

Is she close by so that you could transfer the mechanic and parts buying side of things over to her but still physically guide her through repairs so that she could learn how to maintain her own vehicle (that would be the greatest gift you could give her assuming she has the time)?

I don't mean to generalize (people who generalize are always wrong), but I've seen women who don't know a lot about auto mechanics get ripped off by unscrupulous mechanics more often than I've seen the same thing happen to men.

Assuming no major mechanical problems and a good body/interior with fairly complete maintenance records, that car lists for $2,200-2,500 in an arm's-length sale in my part of the country and probably ends up selling at around $1,800-$2,000. There aren't too many people clamoring for a 17 year old car these days.

I wouldn't charge my own kids more than $500 for a car, and probably less.

If you ask $3000 she will buy it from you too. Why? Because she will want you to have the money just as you would give her the car for free rather than selling it for a $1500 to a stranger. She will think.. daddy is either poor or greedy and doesn't love me LOL. Then she will tell your wife and there will be double trouble LOL.

It is 50% the car value and 50% goodwill on both sides. You might as well offer it for a $500 and see if your daughter writes a check for $1000 on her own because she wants to be fair to you.

This may open some thinking after the transaction:) It may not be about the car anymore and may never be forgotten.

Better sell it for as little as you can, or it may backfire.

I would say: I am giving you the car for $500, if you promise to take a good care of it:). She probably expects it for free and will reply: Ok.. let me think about it. If I agree, I will have my boyfriend inspect it before I buy:). What.. I have to be responsible with my money:)
