1999 V70 XC Winter Tires and Wheel size confusion.

Post by iamfelix »

Hello All,
I've been using this site for a little while now but as this is my first post I'd like to hi and thank you for all the great information on here. I've had a good search through the forums for wheel sizes and tire ratios but I just can't seem to find exactly the size I'm looking at, so here I am...

I've had my V70 XC for a little while now and I'm slowly working through the few issues that it has. After a sketchy drive in the snow I thought it time to get some proper winter tires for it.

I have found a good set of second hand winter tires on steel wheels. The details are:

205/55R16 on steel rims 6.5x16 (5x108 pattern)

The wheels and tires came off of a 2005 v50, I Would really like to know if they will fit on my car or if there will be some rubbing/issues?

Thanks again,
Felix.

The wheels might fit, but if your car is still all wheel drive and the tires are different sizes you risk damaging the all wheel system and the difference in size will probably screw with the abs. I run 16" wheels on my 98 xc from a 2004 xc with no problem, the problem I see would be running the lower profile/ wider tires, as this will change the stance and actual final gear ratio between the front and rear axles.

yes the AWD is all fully working. Sorry I just noticed I'd originally stated I was looking at a pair but I'm actually looking at buying a full set of 4, all of them the same size with the same tires.

Since it's awd car, just make sure and it's very important that all 4 tyres are the same size.

For example...if you go for 205/55/16 make sure that all 4 are the same size and the same brand per axle. That said...it doesn't mean that all 4 tyres must be the same brand, but MUST be the same size.
Front ones can be,let's say,Pirelli snow sport and the rear ones can be Michelin Alpin.

As long as you have same brand on same axle and as long as all 4 are the same size...it's ok for awd car.

Almost forgot...v50 wheels will not fit to your xc because center bore on the rim is 63.4mm and you need 65.1.

Hi Misha,
Thanks for the info, I'm gonna contact the seller just incase for some reason the wheels have the larger bore size but it looks like it's not going to work. The search continues!

I've just had the bores measured with callipers and they're at 66.675 seems a bit of an odd number to me but at least they fit. So finally, is there any issues with offset I should worry about? I think i've checked out every other number now!

Sure they may be bolt-on-able but you had better invest in some custom made spigot rings to ensure the centre bores do their job of supporting the weight of the vehicle.

The wheel studs are there for centring and compressing the wheel to the hub, not for bearing weight. Without matching wheel/hub diameters you WILL get vibration at high speeds that no amount of balancing will remedy.
