Hey guys
Starting a new thread with a few simple (hopefull) questions about my manual swap (which is off the ground and going quite well!)
1) The donor car had the old style abs module setup and my 97 has the new one. Will this impede my ability to fit the clutch master cylinder and clutch hose? as far as i can see there is only one type of hose available so im guessing it should be ok.
2) I have the manual computer to replace the auto one (yay for entire donor cars) Is there any special wiring im going to need to do? Considering there is a huge plug for the auto from the wiring harness that is not gjoing to get used. Plus the pnp switch and the back up light.
3) the auto has magnetic drain plugs and the manual doesnt. should i switch them over?
Thanks
Nick

I think it is all the same as far as the hoses go. My 5 speed is a '94 with the early ABS system and I have never really compared that area of the firewall with my later model automatic cars. If by chance I am under the hood of the two cars I will look to see anything that raises a red flag.
Was the manual car (95) ECU a Motronic with a single module or the Jetronic with two modules? On your '97 you almost certainly have a Motronic module. If the donor car module is a Motronic then you should be well on your way but there were some EGR and SAS differences between model years and even some geographic destinations that might need to be sorted out. If the donor car had a Jetronic system then your path of least resistance is going to be to send Lucky at ARD your '97 module to get it reprogrammed as a manual transmission ECU rather than trying to swap out the entire wiring harness.
The the magnetic drain plugs can't hurt anything so long as they aren't too deep and bump into the internals but they really aren't necessary. The manual transmissions don't generate fine metal shavings like the automatic transmissions do. If there is metal floating around in a manual transmission it is usually big pieces, like teeth off of gears, and the magnet won't help you.

both cars have 2 modules in the black box above the washer fluid reservoir with one empty slot. is one for the engine and one for the tranny? i was always confused about what they did. should i contact lucky? i was under the assumption that the middle module just swapped out but thats why im here!!Ozark Lee wrote:Was the manual car (95) ECU a Motronic with a single module or the Jetronic with two modules? The modules from the '95 are both ECU modules. There is a fuel system module and an ignition system module. On the '95 donor car there is no transmission module since there is no automatic transmission. That car has the Jetronic LH 3.2 system. On your '97 you also have two modules but one is the Motronic ECU (fuel and ignition combined) and the other is the TCU for your existing automatic transmission.
The two systems are largely incompatible. The wiring harnesses are different and some of the sensors are different. I know for sure that the MAF is different. Those differences also extend into the cabin.
Lucky should be able to flash the ECU with the proper manual transmission parameters or you might just be able to find one on ebay or in a junk yard. The latter will be the cheaper option. They are fairly rare but available I would also try Erie VoVo and Tom's Foreign since they both run through a ton of Volvos for salvage.
You should give ARD a call and make sure that they have N/A - manual code. I know he has turbo - manual code and that is a place where it is really your only option since those modules were never available in the US. My guess is that he has the N/A code as well and it won't be a problem for him. Lucky or Michelle can give you a price for the service. At that point you have a price reference and you can shop for the best alternative.
The last option is to simply keep your existing ECU and live with the CEL. If it were just the CEL that wouldn't be a terrible option for me since we don't do any kind of inspections in my area but there are also some less than optimum throttle response issues like the way the engine throttles back as you go between gears.

This might help:
http://www.boschecus.com/bosch-02612030 ... m4-4-1-ecu
According to Bosch numbers you provided in previous post, that ecu is Motronic 4.4 management.
Since your is also '97 it should also be Motronic 4.4.

The description sounds like exactly what you need but I'm not familiar enough with the actual part numbers to verify that for sure.dairyqueen814 wrote:Im on there right now
