a) reset the SERVICE light?
b) change the SERVICE interval limits (mileage, calendar time, engine hours)?
c) read/clear OBDII emission diagnostic DTCs?
d) read/clear DTCs for the other ECUs (COMBI, AW 50-42, Power Seats, Immobilizer, ECC, VGLA, RTI, etc)?
...
Another solution to add to the ones already mentioned is volvo850diag.

1. volvo850diag can both reset the '98 S70 SERVICE light and clear '98 S70 SRS (airbag) DTCs.

It has been able to do that since 2014-07-31 with the volvo850diag v0.7 release.

However, interpretation of the SRS DTCs requires a post-scan of submitting the volvo850diag log file contents to http://jonesrh.info/volvo850/kwpd3b0_interpreter.html for interpretation. All of the SRS DTCs that Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 and Vol-FCR v1.7.3 Demo interprets are also now interpreted by kwpd3b0_interpreter.

volvo850diag can do items a), b), c), d) listed above. However, the pushbuttons to read/clear DTCs for Immobilizer, ECC, VGLA, RTI, etc will come in the v0.8 (or later) release.

volvo850diag works with an ELM327 compatible device (v2 or higher) in conjunction with WinXP (or later), IE8 (or later), and Realterm (v2.0.0.70 is only version tested). Cost is for the ELM327 compatible device and for the Windows system (if you don't have either of those). volvo850diag and Realterm are free and open source.

2. For detailed explanations of '96-'97 850 DTCs and '98 S70/V70/XC70 DTCs, I now recommend all 3 of the following:

- http://www.volvopedia.de/index.php?titl ... de-Tabelle, in its original German or in its very useful, German-to-English Google Translate translation -- top notch site giving a quick, easy-to-read synopsis of Probably Causes, Failure Symptoms, and some other insights not generally known,

- https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... vo_850.zip, and

- http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/850- ... air-manual, which is apparently a page of links to HTML versions of the .pdf files in the Volvo_850.zip just mentioned.

BrickDiagFree has the capabilities to scan & delete error codes. This includes the SRS light.

Available for download from: http://forum.volvo-forum.de
You have to register. A how to guide is found over on brickboard.

The how to guide that Blockpartie mentioned over at brickboard is probably:

http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/157 ... lm327.html

That is my "short" and "medium" length answers to the "How do I download and install Brick-Diag Free?" question. It's probably the best place to look initially for non-German speaking, English speakers that want to register at volvo-forum.de, then download and install brick-diag free.

A somewhat longer explanation (which was the source of the brickboard.com explanations) is available as the answer to the "How do I download and install Brick-Diag Free?" question in volvo_850_obdii_faq.rtf.

There's also some other Brick-Diag Free associated info in volvo_850_diag_links.html.

But, by far and away, the treasure trove of Brick-Diag Free info is http://forum.volvo-forum.de, like blockpartie pointed to.

P.S. Note: The one '98 S70/V70 ECU (that I'm aware of) whose DTCs can not be read and interpreted properly by Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 is the '98 S70/V70 Electronic Climate Control (ECC) DTCs. The problem is due to a missing resource in the build of the executable, and it's a problem that is apparently not going to be fixed by the Brick-Diag Free author. Consequently, Vol-FCR Full will likely remain the most complete DIY-er solution for reading, interpreting, and clearing '98 S70/V70 Electronic Climate Control (ECC) DTCs for the foreseeable future.
