2005 V50 GearTronic...overhead lights

Post by hcritz »

Hey guys...I just recently purchased this V50 online and had it shipped...it arrived with several problems. The overhead lights don't work when the doors are opened...they will come on when turned on manually but get dim if you turn both on...suspected a bad ground. Later found the headliner had been replaced and when the drivers sun visor was replaced they ran one of the screw through the wire for the vanity lights... so now have the headliner out checking out the wiring...hoping to find a fuse blown from that. I do have the wiring diagrams for the car...but it doesn't seem to exactly match??? never good!
The other issue is the Geartronic doesn't work. while I've got the headliner out I'm pulling the seats and such to clean the carpet and all the spilled coffee out of the traction control switch. Got the console out and the shift lever out to replace the gear selector blind which was all crumbled and in the bottom of the shifter. Now the question???? I'm confused...I don't see any electrical parts to make the geartronic work...mechanically the lever slides over and is spring loaded to move forward and back for the + and - but I don't seen anything electrical to make it work??? It's a T5... Am I an idiot??? I haven't seen anything in the wiring diagrams to suggest there are switches???
Anyone can tell me how this is supposed to work? I know I'll probably never use it...but I hate things that don't work properly!!!
Thanks!

OK...Guess I am an Idiot...I just opened the package with the new shift control blind and noticed the nice magnet that's in the right hand side of the plastic...obviously that's what triggers the geartronic via magnetic reed switches on the PC board!!!!
Any thoughts on the overhead lighting would be appreciated still though.
I'm in hopes one of the modules or relays isn't fried.
THANKS!

Hee. If you fought your way into the original broken blind, you're no idiot!

Clearing the pinched/ shorted wire didn't fix the lights? My next thought is to go through the various plugs that supply power to make sure all are clean and tight. In my case, a semi-amateur bent a connector pin when positioning the overhead console loom. If there 's a lot of corrosion, look to the sunroof drains.
