We have the same issue in the Detroit area with independent car lots. When an enthusiast finds a car on one of these lots it's essentially untouchable. They ask too much, the car always has a sketchy history and the seller will generally pile on the lies while smiling at you.

Poor people with poor credit usually end up buying them, which keeps them in the same situation.

I've passed on handful of cars I've found on these lots. Some had potential but the seller couldn't be trusted and ruined the deal.

MErchant circle reviews - very schizophrenic. The upshot with all these guys is they do get in some good cars, but they won't stand behind one if it goes bad. You can't buy long distance from these guys, period.

If you buy from Jim,, OTOH, and the car isn't as advertised, Ill eat my V70 automatic transmission.

Reading some of those comments (on Merchant Circle) is amazing
Don't these people know in almost all states (including PA) a dealer CANNOT keep a deposit if a deal does not go through unless you sign something stating the deposit is no refundable and even then I don't think a dealer can!
And..... if someone is dumb enough to sign something like that they deserve to lose their deposit!
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
