The car I own and is sitting in my driveway sits slightly higher than a V70, significantly lower than the 2001 XCs, doesn't have cladding, and has an LPT with an automatic transmission. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe we did get V70 AWDs. Like an XC without cladding - they have the LPT engine and sit a bit higher than the regular V70 (though I believe lower than the XC), having the same obnoxious setup with the fuel tank and pump. Automatic only.

Volvo did offer the V70 as an AWD in the USA.
All V70 AWD have a slightly raised suspension compared to a V70 FWD. They feature normal V70 bodywork except for the AWD specific rear bumper. Factory offered trim levels did not outside affect appearance.
In the US these cars were offered for the following model years: 1998, 1999, 2000
First generation V70 XC feature significantly raised suspension and can be distinguished by their unique bodywork. This includes front and rear bumper, sideskirts and for 1998 a XC only roof rails.
First gen XC have unique suspension components and are always AWD. Factory offered trim levels can affect outside appearance, for example two-tone paint.
All US market V70 AWD and V70 XC were 2,4L low pressure turbos with 193bhp. Only available transmission was the 4speed automatic.

What many people get confused about is the XC badge. My car is NOT an XC. XC's became a specific model in 2001. Cars badged with an XC were V70 variants up until then. My car is a V70 XC, and specifically a V70 XC SE, and it is exactly the car he described.

V70 AWD is not equal to a V70 XC. Cars badged as "V70 XC" are what Volvo called the "V70 CrossCountry" and it's technically a specific model. Specific literature, specific parts, it's own model listing in VIDA - list goes on. And yes I am talking about the P80 version.
Even the later P2X model started life as a V70 XC. They rebranded it for the XC90 introduction and launch of their CrossCountry range.

Vida has both XC and AWD variants of the P80 V70 as selection options.
What is very interesting is that the P80 V70 AWD was fitted with B5244T2 engine and AW55-50SN AWD OR a B5244T engine and AW50-42 AWD.
I doubt the US market saw the AW55-50SN in AWD P80 format...they were probably all 4 speeds as were in Oz.
