98 V70XC. Grinding Noise Not Constant

Thanks. Final question on this post.

Before I removed the shaft I could rotate it slightly back and forth when it was in park. Would that indicate anything wrong with the bevel gear or is a little play normal? Just don't want to put it together if it is not completely solved.

Can you quantify "slightly"?

A slight amount of play is normal gear lash and spline play. If there is more than, and I will try to quantify but I may be off the mark, 1 degree then there is likely other trouble. The 1 degree is based on my best recollection of what I felt on my gear when I re-installed it and it was likely more like 1/2 degree. I never tried to measure it or anything.

Given that you did, fairly conclusively, find the real source of your noise I wouldn't think that the other components had any serious problems. When the bevel gear really gets shelled out it is like driving with square tires.
