1998 V70 Will not idle then stalls

My 1998 Volvo V70 has just developed an idle problem. She will start..the tach will go up to about a
1000 RPM then will stall out. And to make matters worse it is not constant ! With what little I know, I am considering the throttle position sensor may be at fault. Would there be any other things that might cause this problem ?

Is the check engine light on and have you read the codes? Without codes about all we can do is guess which gets very expensive.

If you can get the codes read we can point you in the right direction but be sure to get the actual Pxxxx code number rather than a description of the code that the auto parts store might give you. The code descriptions don't always translate well.

+1 to what Lee says. I had a similar problem with my parents N/A 850, but I diagnosed it from the on-board diagnostic the car had. Get the code read, or buy a cheap OBD2 code reader and read the code yourself. A code reader quickly pays for itself. You can buy Bluetooth OBD2 plugs that can then be linked to your smartphone or tablet using Torque App (Free trail version and $5 Pro version).

I have a 2000 V70 and have had the same problem before, I cannot remember what code my car threw but basically the antenna ring around the ignition is what was going bad. And the car would do exactly what you are describing, occasionally it would start and then instantly shut off. Apparently it was due to the ignition not receiving a proper signal. Again this was on a 2000 V70, personally have no idea if it is the same on a 1998 but its worth a shot checking.
