I have a V 70 XC 2000 When I first start the car in the morning it usually runs and idles fine, good power for about 2k where I tern onto the main road. At this point as I stop it starts to idle rough and at low speed the brake pedal feels hard. I then drive for another 7 k and stop. Switch off the motor and wait 60 seconds for what I think is the computer fan to stop. i then can start again and it is all back to normal.
If I try to re start the car before it is up to full operating temperature it is hard to start and when it does it still idles rough.A local mechanic that works on similar models suggested it could be the fuel pump relay.
I have tried to find this relay but cant locate it.This an Australian R/H drive and the main relay box under the bonnet is different to most of the ones shown on this site. all the relays are black and none are marked as fuel pump relay. There are no relays on the dashboard fusebox and it is not listed on the rear fuse / relay box. Maybe it doesn't have one.
The problem may not have anything to do with the fuel / relay.
I have replaced - timing belt - MAF - cleaned ETC - fuel filter - air filter.
Once the motor is over the rough idle bit it will run OK until the next cold start.
I have now run out of ideas and hoping some one with more experience with this model can help.

It still should be relay 103 although it might be a different color. On your RHD car I believe the main fuse box is on the right hand side of the car rather than the left but it will be in the same relative position. On the 70 series there is also a kidney shaped auxiliary fuse box but the relay is not in there. It should be below the cover on the main fuse box.Ray Cra wrote:I have a V 70 XC 2000 When I first start the car in the morning it usually runs and idles fine, good power for about 2k where I tern onto the main road. Your symptoms though don't really sound like a fuel pump relay at all, they sound more like an ECT sensor or something. There is no computer fan on the car so I think you are hearing the engine cooling fan. How long does it run after turn off the key? A second or two is typical unless the car is very hot and you are running the A/C. If it runs on much longer than a couple of seconds then that is not typical behavior.

My broadcast clients used to set up analog audio gear maintenance schedules to completely shotgun replace all of the electrolytic capacitors on three to five year schedules. In that case they were mostly audio coupling capacitors and power supply capacitors. In the case of the audio gear you could start to hear it when they were going bad either with a lack of low frequency content and or 60 cycle hum. Having them explode is rare but you can often see when they are going bad when the lead end(s) get(s) puffy. It is much easier to actually see bad ones when they have axial leads.mecheng wrote:I've seen caps explode when they are done, and yes they do degrade with time but that is usually many years later.
In the case of the fuel pump relays they are part of the timing circuit and the timing is a bit less critical.

Does the relay time the injector pulse? I thought that is what the ECU does.
There are caps in basically every electronic control module, ECU, etc. Or is the caps in this relay particularlly suceceptible?

Fuel pump relay have nothing to do with injectors.

Lee. Thanks for your prompt reply. There is a fuse box on the R/H end of the dash board, all fuses no relays.
The fan sound I am hearing after the key is off is a different sound to the cooling fan or AC fan ,may be more of a humming sound rather than a fan. It usually runs for 60 seconds after the key is off .
I have also heard this sound when I open the drivers door, but still cant trace where where it is coming from.
I agree it doesn't sound like a fuel pump relay related problem but one I would like to eliminate

Hopefully Mike runs across this post. I have never set eyes on a RHD 70 series car so I can't get more specific.

@RayCra: Yes of course the RHD Aussie cars are just a mirror image of the LHD cars in relation to relay positions.
Just behind the main array of fuses near the wipers you'll see four torx 25s. Just undo them and remove the plastic cover to expose the extra relays including the fuel one (still numbered 103) It will either be pink or green.
I have a good spare one here if you want something to test with. Afew years ago I resoldered a fuel relay's contacts after intermittent starting and engine dying on our 850 sedan. Went for 5 years after that without a hiccup until it was sold

Mick. Thanks for your input, Good to have a contact closer to home. Thanks for the offer of your relay.
Still can't find mine. The Relay / Fuse box under the bonnet is different to most boxes. it is covered with a clip on lid not screwed on and no green or red relays, all black nothing with 103 on it.
See how I go uploading a photo. The box on the R/H side of the dash is all fuses.

I can see the confusion now. You have a P2 series V70 XC which was released in 2000 in Australia and UK. In the USA a 2000 V70 XC was released in 2001.
The gents here on Matthews mistook you for a P80 series because you jumped in on the P80 forum 1993-2000 and added to a P80 post. Your car is known as a P2 and ran from 2001-2007.
Your fuel pump fuse is on the side of the dashboard where there is a pull off panel. The P2 series ran a fuel pump module not a relay.

Apologies for the model confusion. My first Volvo and new to the forum. Somewhat explains the confusion when ordering parts. Build date Sep 2000 but was told it must be 2001.
Found the fuse, thanks, stopped looking for the relay that doesn't exist
Start looking elsewhere for the start / rough idle problem.
May have a new clue. Last night had trouble starting, when it did it had the rough idle and Immobilisers warning sign on screen . Drove it for 6 or 7 k until fully warmed up, turned it off for 60 seconds all OK again.
