02' S80 Power stearing noise....

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

02' S80 Power stearing noise....

Post by Awright »

I just recently bought a 2002 Volvo S80 T6 with only 49,000 miles. I have had some minor issues that the dealer has taken care of under my 1000 mile warranty, but now i have a big concern. The power stearing is extremly loud, i worked on older volovs for 4 years in HS, my teacher was a volvo specialist. I cant emphize enough how loud it is, its even louder when i turn to the left and accelerate, another problem that has come up is when i turn the wheel hard to the left it sounds like its catching the wheel well, but its like its getting ripped into shreds. My car goes into service on friday morning and i am wondering exactly what i should have them look for, or other concerns i should have them check before my warranty runs out.

I have already had them replace a washer jet, mr car was out of brake fluid, and i was getting a vibration at 60 mph which turns out to be a bent wheel that there going to fix. They ran and OBD test and everything came back ok, and i got a current inspection sticker.

Anyways, any suggestions you can give me would be great.

Thanks andrew

I have the same vehicle as you which I purchased last August..A great car although is expensive to repair at the dealer...I just had a new L/F Hub replaced and L/F inner tie rod..Also tire rotation/balance and 4 wheel alignment..The cost was near $800.00, but my cost was the $100.00 deductible for the 24,000 mile 24 month warranty I purchased with the vehicle...
What I'am getting at, is if you can, buy the extended warranty..It very well may same you thousands on any future repairs....
I'd suggest having the dealer perform a visual inspection and give you a copy of the inspection..This may cost a small amount (I paid $29.95) and it included a Oil/Filter change...(You have something in writing this way)
Another thing,. make it a habit to do your own checking at least monthly on all fluid levels and tire pressure...Read your owners manual which will tell you recommended service intervals...Hope you enjoy your Volvo...

The power steering sytem is supposed to be serviced as well. But with your mileage I wouldn't think that it is time. One the other hand hydraulic fluid is very susceptable to moisture. Get yourself a 60 cc syringe, with a hose attached to it (these can be found at most auto. parts stores) and syphon out as much of the old fluid as you can. Then refill to the appropriate level with new fluid. This worked on my wifes car (90k on it), but here noise was moderate and intermitent.

I agree with Jackson's suggestion. There's a write-up in the database (tab above) on how to flush your power steering system for 850/70 series cars too...should be no different for your car. Just read your owners manual to make sure of the type of fluid you're suppose to use. If it's the same as 70 series, then it's ATF (Dexron III).
