Thanks for the quick response. I found the flame trap tutorial, and I'll get on it this weekend. I appreciate your help.

Here is a link that takes you to the fcpgroton page for all the pcv replacement parts plus a diagram that identifies them:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850oiltrap.htm

If you were to order every single piece shown on the diagram it would total $134.30. I only ordered the oil trap and the flame trap kit. The reason I didn't order the rest is because they are "genuine Volvo" hoses, ect. so you know you are going to pay a huge price premium for the name. If I discover I do have to get a small vacuum hose or other hose that is not shaped or formed I'd rather get those at an AutoZone or the like. They are abundant and inexpensive.

Mike, it is at least prudent to check the PCV nipple connection at the base of the accordion air-intake hose. If it is clogged, it should be cleaned...if the small hoses to it that go to the oil separator are bad, they should be replaced as should all vacuum hoses that have become hard and/or brittle. fcpgroton.com sells an entire PCV kit for less than $130. If you do their "buy it now." on eBay, the kit comes with an intake manifold gasket too and is actually a bit cheaper than buying directly from them.

Good advice. I will be certain to check, clean and/or replace anything that is cracked, bad or clogged. I was thinking buying the "Genuine Volvo" hoses as opposed to getting hoses as Autozone was kinda of like paying $12.00 for a replacement instrument panel light at Volvo versus paying $2.99 for a package of two at Autozone.

I forgot that fcpgroton also sells on ebay with a "buy it now" special, so I will start checking there as well. Thanks David!

Yeah, I would avoid hoses from auto houses....they are thinner and don't do will with the constant ebb and flow (vacuum/boost) that occurs with our cars. Genuine Volvo isn't bad, but I did all of my hoses except for those with special connectors on the ends (really, all of the PCV system hoses) with silicone from www.stylinmotors.com If you'll click on the Volvo link on the left, you will see their vacuum hose kits. Just get the basic one if you go this route...the deluxe kit is over-kill.

Ok, here is where I am so far.

As advised, I disconnected and checked the flame trap on my engine. There was some crud buildup, but the trap itself had 75% of the holes breathing and unclogged.

However, taking off the throttle cover revealed an annoying surprise. The Flame Trap has two hoses coming off the backside. The larger one dives under the manifold and out of sight, and the smaller one comes up and connects to a metal part. Where the small tube connects to the metal part, someone has tried in vain to seal it and keep it in place with tape and some thick rubber glue. There is a very noticeable hissing sound coming from that area, so it's obvious that I've lost most of the vacuum in the PCV system.

I'm guessing that the connector on the metal part has broken off, or is damaged somehow (I haven't removed the rubber glue and tape yet- I need to drive it in the morning). Could anyone tell me what that small, black, metal part is called?

Thanks again,
John

I think you're talking about the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It is important and needs to be sealed. You will probably have to get a new hose and clamp. I have an old Turbo hose (has the strange finger off the IC hose to the throttle) that goes to this that you could have if your car was a Turbo car, but since it's not, yours is different from mine.

Thanks.
I don't have a parts list or manual yet, so I've taken a picture. Could someone please confirm that this is the IAC ($$$) that's been hastily patched by the previous owner? It is the black piece that is bolted down and sits vertically.
Thank You,
John

Wow! I have searched extensively for something that even resembles your intake manifold/throttle area and I don't find anything that really matches up. Non-turbo, automatic, right? '94. I'm wondering if this was originally a Canadian car or something. Specifically, I don't find the hose that you have that you've written in red, "tape (?)." If that truly does seem like tape, could you peak under it to see if it's actually an electrical connector under it? Btw, where does the other end of this hose go to? I'm thinking that on your car that might be the brake servo hose...does it lead to a large drum like black disc that's attached to the firewall under the driver's windshield area?
Anyway, just the basics- thought this might help you:

By the way, "B" is the IAC inlet...you may have to replace the part it connects to (vacuum tree). I'm pretty sure it has threads or some type of "snap-in" connector on it that's fubarred and allowing a leak, or it was a solid piece that has "broken off" the top. Someone tried to "patch" it with RTV or some other sealant. You might be able to take it loose and do the same thing with a better sealant, but replacement would be better. Problem is that I don't even see a part number for this. The other end of the hose from "B" expands to a slightly larger hose. I expect the IAC to be there.
