00 V70 XC SE Correct Bevel Gear Oil?

Do I really need this $30/liter angle gear oil, or would any good quality 75W-90 gear oil work just as well? Thanks

The AWD is disconnected, but the angle gear is whining and it seems to be getting worse.

I used some Royal Purple GL5 that I had left over from filling my 5 speed but it was stupid expensive too. I think the Volvo stuff is synthetic so you should probably stick with something that is synthetic but really any gear lube should work.

On paper you can use any oil you like as long as it matches the specifications. Personally I'd use OEM just to be save.

A whining angle gear is close to become a failing angle gear. Changing the oil will not make the noise go away at this stage.

I just put Lucas Oil synth. 75w/90 (from Advance $17 for the bottle) in my '98xc. It appeared to be of high quality... but then again most are nowadays.

I use motorcraft conventional 75-90. 40,000 miles, no problems. This is on my original bevel gear with 246,000 miles on it. Make sure whatever you choose to use is non-foaming.

Maybe better to remove the angle gear altogether.
