noticed car had a very slight surging today at 60 mph, then car went into limp mode with "reduced engine performance" displayed and motor would only reach 1800 rpm. drove 1 mile at 15 mph (max speed) that it would go, to a place to pull off and park. shut car off, restarted and car ran normal. drove home 25 miles and everything normal.
no display message after restarting. what should I do to diagnose?

I'll also add the car has 116,000 miles, and that the cruise control had been working intermittently and would "kick out" when it wanted to. lately though (last 2,000 mile) this has not happened.

A lot of things could cause this unfortunately. Without a code it will be hard to start diagnostics. Does anything look unusual in the engine bay? If the turbo or waste gate died, performance would suffer a lot. It would still run smooth but have almost no power compared to normal. Any strange noises?

Can you rent out a code scanner and do a scan of maf, fuel trims, throttle and pedal position, engine load?

I have a scanner and no codes stored. no strange noises.
replaced air filter today (could not see through the old one). I have driven this 35 miles since this happened with no additional problem. Has always idled fine even when the limp mode occured.
I'm thinking of carry my scanner if this happens again before any reset occurs by restarting.
I read elsewhere in this forum that the throttle opening plate can get crud and deposit on it and may be the culprit?
Anyone who has any similar problem please report your experience.
Thanks All!

If it is crud on the throttle plate, I've had good results using SeaFoam intake cleaner before.

i had a similar situation recently, however, i did throw misfire codes. when did you last replace plugs and/or coils? i have posted live data numbers in another thread. see if your scanner can pull data for comparison.

Very likely!
ECU is working hard to keep it afloat.
Just not low enough to trigger CEL.
Clean MAF sensor as first step, no cost to you.
