Not sure yet what's going on with Volvo engine burning valves like that, it used to be that if valve clearance was too tight the valve would not fully close and will burn due to lack of cooling. On the carbon deposit theory, I opened up an engine at about your mileage and found hardly any carbon in the chamber and top of piston. It is true that I used injector cleaner but not overly. It seems there is something particular to these Volvo engines since a lot of people report burned valves. Like you're saying, if you want to hang on to this car and know/like to do some of the work youself I'd consider opening up this one - after confirming the low comp. of course.
thanks. for now, i'm telling myself it is carbon deposits. i am going to run some seafoam and see if that helps.

fortunately, i find these motors relatively easy to work on. but...i definitely don't have the energy to pull the head right now. when i burned a valve on the 2000, the hole in the valve was as big as a pencil eraser. with that hole, the motor was basically running on 4 cylinders and idled very rough. right now, the 2005 idles very smooth.

have you had any experience dropping a scope into a cylinder to inspect the valves?

Not personally, but I've read of people who had good results with the bore scope.

Just registered, not sure how to explain smooth idle when you have a compression inbalance. I'd think the compression test was flawed for that cylinder - I'd repeat the test before anything else. All scan numbers are good and in fact engine runs good. Does not add up.

i know, i'm a little stumped. i'm hoping i did something wrong on cylinder 1. not sure what though. my gauge has a hose that with a fitting on the end, o-ring on the fitting to seal on the head. i'm hoping maybe it didn't seal properly. i do the same thing on all other cylinders.

just to be clear, i say smooth idle, it jumps maybe 15 to 20 rpm at idle. this is per my code reader. the tach is sitting right at 650 and not bouncing.

i'll get new numbers and report back. it will take a few days. stay tuned.

thanks for all the insight!

draser wrote:Your mixture and combustion are as they should based on fuel trims. No air leaks, clean injectors, good fuel pressure. Good MAF, not sure about load I think it should be lower at idle. Can you do another take at 2500 rpm steady for engine load? It may show a cat in process of getting plugged. Is fuel economy and pick up good?
