1999 S70 T5 Engine Compatibility
I have a 1999 S70 T5 manual tranny with the B5234T3 engine vin 53 and it needs an engine "large hole in block behind cyl. #3" and im wondering if all vin 53 engines will fit. I have found a wrote off 2004 S60 with a vin 53 engine but im not sure weather it is a direct bolt in swap.

I know the earlier engines, 1998 and earlier have a different accessory mounting configuration and they don't have CVVT so we can rule those out. At some point with the P2 cars I think they got CVVT on both the intake and the exhaust cams so that could be a problem as well.
Your car should only have CVVT on the exhaust cam but you might be able to swap out the intake cam sprocket from your bad engine and just not hook up the intake CVVT valve and have it work fine even if the replacement engine had CVVT on both cams. I really don't know much about the P2 cars since I've never had one.
Where was the tach when it let go?

Haha, it was a hair under 6000rpm and 3-4 car lengths ahead of a 99 mustang GT when the engine failed.
So is there any way to tell for sure if the cam sprocket will bolt up from one engine to the other?

As I think about it, the sprockets won't just swap. The CVVT hub is held onto the camshaft with a singe torx head bolt through the center of the hub behind the sprocket and the standard sprocket has three bolts. I wouldn't even want to think about trying to drill and tap the end of the camshaft but that is something that a machine shop could likely do if you pulled the cam cover off and removed the cam.
I would love to hear from some of the guys that have dealt with the newer engines to hear about how other compatibility stuff, like intake and exhaust port sizes and shapes, shakes out.

Anything up to and including 2002 should be fine if it's a B5234 series. (not pre 99 though) Ozark mentioned a year where there are both intake and exhaust CVVT however you'll be safe if you stick to the above.
Don't mention T5 terminology to parts dismantlers. T5 refers to HPT engines like yours. Most dismantlers think T5 means turbo 5 cylinder and may supply a LPT engine instead.

nevermind, I just digested Lee's post
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Lee, did the actual bosses on the block change 98 to 99, or just the brackets etc..., it would be more work than plug-and-play with a complete engine but, could someone swap the head and brackets early to late and vice-versa, or are the actual block castings as pertains to the bosses different ?

The block did change but, as Mike documented, that is the easy stuff to get around if you are a good TIG welder and have a decent tap set.
The real problems between generations of the white block are on the top end. The '93 and early '94 with VVIS have very different intake ports. Once you get into CVVT engines the seal size is different due to the addition of the CVVT hub rather than just the end of the camshaft. That one might be solvable but the oil passages between the block and the head also changed with the addition of CVVT as I understand things and that one is tough to solve.

That thread is somewhat amazing in its depth and clarity.

Even with non turbo non CVVT engines like the 99 I did the cams are not interchangable bw new and older generation due to the design. They locate differently at the cam sprocket side.
