1995 850 Turbo Wagon will not start

My first post here, thanks in advance for any advise.

I have a 1995 850 Turbo Wagon that will not start. 168K miles, new battery and plugs.

It died the first time while running errands, after third stop I started it to leave Home Depot, it started and died as I began to back up. It would not start afterwards. I had it towed to a garage and after three days they started it and replaced the plugs. I knew this would not be the end of it and I was right. Now it is dead in my garage. The whether here in CT is very cold now as it was when it first died.

I ran OBD and got no codes. I checked the schraeder valve and no gas there. Fuel pump does not seem to be working, I cannot hear it.

In researching here and elsewhere it seems like it could be the fuel pump relay or cam shaft sensor.

Any ideas? Any way to diagnose rather than just start replacing parts? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay in the fuse box are suspect.

I know you dont want to pay extra for parts ..but i would get a fuel pump relay and start there. You should change these regularly anyway.

You can always test the fuel pump by listening for it or running a new power source to it.

Thanks for your quick reply. I have no problem replacing parts if it is a good likelyhood it is the problem. I will get a replacement from the dealer on Monday a give it a shot. Thanks for your help, I will post the outcome.

i'd recomend pricing the part at fcpgroton.com first. they're a reputable site and have good prices. Many people on this forum use them for their parts source. dealerships steal from you

I replaced the fuel pump relay and no luck. Still no gas, no sound form the pump.

I could replace the pump but not sure if that is the problem or not. Any way to test it?

Disconnect the wiring harness, at the pump, and check for 12v at the harness. If you see 12 v then that pump is NFG.

Remove the carpeting over the fuel pump and have someone turn the key while you listen for the pump to whine. If you hear it, then replace the fuel filter and have another go at starting it. If you do not hear it then disconnect the wiring harness, at the pump, and check for 12v at the harness. If you see 12 volts then that pump is NFG.

Thanks for your help, here's what happened....

I checked for power and there was power. I reconnected the pump and nothing. Rechecked the power and it was still there. Hooked up the pump again and still nothing. Then I tapped on the top of the pump and it started to work, quite loudly. The car then started.

Bad pump right?

yup its the pump.. you mentioned to me that you rapped it and it started.. well thats what happens.. it starts jamming up mechanically and you get the .. sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt.

Keep your other relay you replaced as a spare (test it again after you replace the pump) in the glove compartment.. and get your pump done. Should keep you cruising for awhile!
