97 850 clutch adjustment

Post by dairyqueen814 »

hey guys
Just finished my manual swap a week ago and noticed that when my foot is all the way to the floor and the car is stationary in first gear it's still moving forward and backwards if in reverse. I'm guessing (obviously) that the clutch isn't fully engaged and I'm wondering if there's a way to adjust it. It's a bit difficult to shift into first and reverse and I throw it in neutral when I'm stopped and still smell burning clutch when I get home. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

There is no adjustment. Did the slave cylinder get totally bled?

Lee,
What do you mean? Did I bleed the system? Yes I bled the system. Is it possible there is air in the slave itself that needs to be pushed out a different way?

What you describe does sound like there is air in system and it is preventing the slave cylinder from being fully actuated. I don't know of any special procedure, I use a MityVac and keep a close eye on the brake fluid level. The clutch supply is pretty high on the brake fluid reservoir.

I guess that makes sense since losing the brakes due to a clutch leak would be a bad thing.

I'll take a look but I filled it up plus extra when I did the job and bled the lines with a very experienced mechanic (my dad) I'll take another look. I suppose it could be a bad slave cylinder. But those aren't super cheap. If it were bad it would be leaking correct?
I'll check the fluid after class

I've never seen one that was bad and didn't leak. Air can get caught in the system just about anywhere, at the master cylinder or the slave cylinder. The only time I have ever had to mess with it was on a clutch change and the system never got opened. I bled it anyway and it worked fine.

The problem with bleeding it from scratch might be that you really never get a lot of resistance at the slave cylinder end like you do with brakes so it never really forces the air to the end of the line.

I did use one of those hand pump vacuum bleeder things. I can tell you my hands were tired when the bleeding was done. I've been driving it for. Week maybe some air has consolidated.
