1997 S70R shockabsorbers

Post by mathieu_p »

Maybe I am looking at the wrong sites but is it true you can't fit Koni FSD shockabsorbers under a S70R. As far as I can see you can only fit them under a classic, V or C version. Is this right?

This is the first S70R I've ever heard of.

How do you mean?

It's registration says 25-09-1997; model: S70; R
You can see it as a MY 1998 car but it's registered in 1997

Europe was a year ahead of North America on model years with the P80 cars.

The rear shocks on the R may have been Nivomats. The way to tell is if they have a bellows on the top of them. Standard shocks don't have the bellows and Nivomats do.

Standard shocks will bolt up with a different top mount but the springs are quite a bit different. You would need to change the springs along with the shocks to convert it for use with a standard shock absorber.

The S70R wasn't sold in North America or Australia. Most of the forums I've visited have no mention of it hence my comment.

That model would have sold well in the USA and Australia as we only had the V70Rs. Is yours AWD?

From the pictures it is a great looking car.

The page references an AWD version of it which would logically have Nivomats.

I'll take the 5 speed version - in Saffron!

1998 S70Rs were FWD only and sold in Europe only
Not all that many were built, maybe 3-500 or so, perhaps less. I have no access to those numbers.
Many/most/possibly all were Saffs. I've never seen a picture of one that was not Saffron!

From the page:
The S70R saloon and V70R estate remain as before, but customers now have the option of the estate model fitted with Volvo's sophisticated All-Wheel-Drive system. The AWD system used in the V70R AWD

Note, it references wagons, not sedans

Ok to be more exact:
It's a nautic blue pearl 1997 S70R
252K km (156K mile)
250 HP (but I guess some have retired :))
It has some issues with the paint but overall it (or he, maybe a she) is in a good condition)
When I bought it the Volvo dealer did a thorough checkup and gave some TLC which it desperatly needed.

My longtermplan is to do some upgrades like:
- a complete respray because of some crackle issues (hope I use the right word)
- a stainless steel sport exhaustsystem
- HID headlights
- Koni FSD shocks (if possible)
- Polyurethane bushings
- Chiptuning
- upholstery repair

Anyway enough to be done but I take my time

FSD shocks look like a good compromise. I run a 2000 V70R, but it appears these don't fit the AWD version V70R. I removed the Bilstein HD shocks from the front of my car (fitted by PO) as they were too hard for road use, and fitted Touring spec. instead. I can now drive without fear of loosening my fillings! These still don't have the 'comfort' on a bumpy surface that my V70XC had on Boge/Sachs (OE) and 15" tires over 17's on the R. But then I guess the R was never meant to be 'soft'.

Good luck with all your plans on your car!

Neil.
