Greetings. Welcome to MVS.

Are you sure it ever worked? The prop shaft (drive shaft) to the rear differential is a know weakness on the early AWD cars and it is very common for that shaft to simply be removed once the joints or the carrier bearing go bad. The car continues to work as a FWD car and it will run forever that way but there won't be any drive to the rear wheels. The way to tell is to get underneath the car and look to see if there is indeed a drive shaft from just behind the engine to the rear axle.

I was all excited to have AWD when I bought my first XC only to learn later that the prop shaft had been removed.

If the drive shaft is there then chances are the transfer case (bevel gear, angle gear) is bad.

If the bevel gear has failed it will not transfer the power to the rear wheels even with the prop-shaft in place. Another culprit may be a failed viscous coupling unit which is fitted just in front of the rear axle with the prop-shaft connected to the front of it.

I had the splined coupler go bad on my 2000 XC which is between the bevel gear and the transmission

There is a cause for this to happen.

These couplers are designed to break in case something in the driveline locks up. In my case it was the viscous coupler that locked up and destroyed those splines. You end up with an FWD car when that happens.

Thanks for the reply, it was working before I was able to lunch my boat on a sandy beach in Mexico now I am getting stuck all the time and the front wheel are just spinning like never before just wondering if it is the coupler or the Bevel

Only way to find out is to remove the prop-shaft. Then try to turn the front wheels while off the ground and see if the rear flange on the angle gear turns. This is not conclusive but if the sleeve has failed, then there will be little or no turning.

Do you recall hearing a loud 'bang' at any point while driving the car or felt it? If the viscous coupler has failed/seized, then the angle gear may have failed in sympathy.

As for parts, as you are on the eastern side, try Erie Vo-Vo for parts.

VADIS/VIDA have exploded parts diagrams but I don't think they are all on the same page. Some of the dealership websites, like Tasca Parts, have the diagrams online.

if the viscous cupling is not fonctionning properly or failed you will not have traction on the passenger front wheel no ? when I got stuck in the sand both wheels were spinning
