2002 camshaft gear and timing/alignment

Post by Robinfloyd »

So I have changed a timing belt before...been a while. My intake cam blew a front seal - after some searching I found this to be the issue. It was easy enough to replace. The problem is I took the gear off of the camshaft and did not mark it first. I did not have to touch the exhaust camshaft with the variable valve timing. I have 2 questions.

(1) how to align the cam gear on the camshaft. There are 3 bolts, and I was not smart enough to mark it before removal. How to match the gear when putting back on? There looks to be a small dimple on the front of the camshaft. If that's it, what do I match it to on the gear? On the outside of the gear, I can see the timing tic mark but that doesn't seem to align with it. There is also an "M" on it too. I know I have a 33% chance guessing, but want a little better opportunity than that.....

(2) for the life of me, I can't locate a tic mark or notched gear on the crank. I have rotated the engine by hand many times....I can see some marks on the harmonic balancer. Does it need removing to get the alignment or can these marks be used? If these marks used, how so?

I am able to locate the tic marks on the cam gears and can align them with the cover marks, but if I have the intake cam gear on the wrong location this does me no good. Anyone else have difficulties locating the crank tdc position? Any help (and pics if you have them!) much appreciated.

If you lined up timing marks before removing belt then no big deal. Just remove the camshafts back caps and make sure slots are both horizontal then install sproket lining up its mark to cover's. Crank should be fine. If not, then we'll figure something out.

i took the gear off, so I dont know its orientation to the camshaft (3 possibilities/3 bolts). so its necessary to view the cam from the rear to see if it lines up ? I can see no mark on the bottom crank either to align. Does the balancer need to come off to see the tic mark?

No. Mark it very hard to see, but it's there. You may want to google pictures of this mark, I was able to find a few when was doing t-belt on P2 first time in life.

The back slots will not be lined up right now, since sprokets were not alig
ned to cover marks at dissassembly. Look at where the exhaust sproket mark is, then position the intake sproket the same way and a little retarded. Imagine how the belt drives both sprokets and how the exhaust will reach mark on cover and about where intake needs to be to reach its mark on cover. Having 3 screw holes will narrow it down. So say exhaust is at 1 then your intake should be at 3 on the clock, then as they both rotate and exhaust sproket mark lines up to cover at like 11 then intake mark will be at 1. Do not rotate anything.

Actually, both marks are at 12 looking in the book, that much easier. Basically exhaust and intake sprokets marks are in sync.

You can feel the mark by the hand. It's a small bump on the top left corner of the 'n' kind of metal part

Search youtube videos! It was a tremendous help for me to learn the volvo timing belt process/cam positioning / VVT etc.
