2000 S70 Broken Transmission fluid dipstick

Post by Delirious »

I was checking my ATF level and accidently broke the plastic dipstick on the way back in. For the time being with most of the dipstick in the tranny tube I replaced what was left of it into the tube to keep out moisture and debris. the million dollar question: Is there any way of getting the broken off part of the dip stick out and is there any danger of driving with the broken piece inside.

How far down in the tube is it from the top? If it is close enough you might be able to get to it with a pair of hemostats. Other than that you can remove the tube, it is held on with a nut by the PNP switch.

I just finished replacing the transmission in my 4X4 Suburban so I am particularly risk averse when it comes to transmissions at this time, I wouldn't drive it until the dipstick is removed.

I can't see any danger, because it sounds like the broken piece is pretty long.

Just remove the whole dipstick tube, there is only one bolt. Will be easier if you pull the air cleaner and the ducting to the throttle body, etc.

It is not the circled bolt you need to remove, it is the larger one just to the right of the circle. The one to the right holds the dipstick tube in, just wiggle the tube out once you remove the bolt.

EDIT: what Lee said, I spent too much time looking for a picture ...
