2000 V70R - Trunk floor opening panel request

Post by scot850 »

On my ever more frustrated attempts to stop a creaking from the rear trunk area on the wagon, I find every time I remove some part or panel a PO has been in before and broken or abused something.

I have removed everything from the rear area and noticed that the rearmost panel that covers the spare tire area has several screws missing (a bit like myself according to my wife!). One of the PO's had fitted the spare up-side down, and as the cover didn't fit right, has possibly 'modified' it to make it fit by removing bits.

It also looks like it may have had a couple of support brackets at either end, possibly not. PLEASE, could one of you kind folk, if you have a 98-00 V70 wagon, could you lift this cover and take a photo(s) of the underside where the metal pivot bar is so I can see how many screws should be in there and if there is anything else missing. I can't get to a pick-'n-pull until next week and we are supposed to get snow all weekend.

Thanks as always,

Neil.

To get this right, do you want photos of the brackets where the pivot bar falls into as well, or just the bar itself? If you can wait until the weekend, I can take some shots then.

Kahl you are a star! Many thanks for taking the time to take and post the pictures for me. Much appreciated.

I have now attached below some photos of my load area cover for comparison, and if I may ask you to check a couple of things for me. First photos:
LH end of rear spare wheel cover
LH end of rear spare wheel cover
End view of LH end pivot arm
End view of LH end pivot arm
LH support bracket half
LH support bracket half
Center portion of rear cover
Center portion of rear cover
RH end of rear load cover
RH end of rear load cover
End view of RH end pivot arm
End view of RH end pivot arm
From the pictures (I tried to take one of the whole length in one picture, but too small to see clearly) can you answer the following please:

1) Should the ends of the pivot arms be crushed almost flat like in pictures 2 and 6? If yours don't look like these what do they look like?

2) Can you confirm if all the screws are in the same locations? Several were missing from mine, and I put replacements I had, into the holes that I could tell had metal thread inserts in. Have I got them all?

3) Finally, is there any form of re-enforcing brackets at each pivot arm end positioned at 45 degrees to the direction of the pivot arm near the end where the arms bend at each end? There are 2 holes there and some indentations at that point, but not sure if this was caused by a missing bracket, or just where the load cover rests near the ends in this area?

Although, this may have issues, I did remove it today, along with both the wooden carpet covered panels behind the rear wheel arches, and the spare wheel. Creaking was still there! I had to ran a grocery/liquor run, and noticed on the return, there didn't appear to be any squeaking from the back of the car. Only can conclude that possibly the front hinged cover panel is the problem, and by having weight on it the extra weight prevented movement. More work to do after weekend work! Thanks for heated garage!

Hey, thank you Neil for reminding.
I have taken apart a few at the yards while not paying attention.

I actually have two complete sets of beige floor panels, carpeted sides, and side nets in storage, of which I have hoarded.
Luckily, the XC, is not blemished in the back as it is the dark grey/black type.

It will all come back when the EVAP leak chasing begins.

AWD is a test of my patience for over engineering. Possibly lack of forethought on the part of the "New Team" as to not let the saddle tank be fleshed out completely.
I have only read enough at this point, while seeing the '98-'00 AWD begin showing up at the yards to see it is only another small challenge.

Challenge being, find the parts I need before another enthusiast in my area.
I actually enjoy that part, unless it is not an enthusiast, but a scrap salesman on the acknowledged selling sites.
Ahh...
I feel I have vented.
Let me know if you guys need that in Beige, or Dark Charcoal.
Actually, most any non-maintenance, now thinking, many maintenance parts found to be good for diagnostics
From me, that would be the price to ship. That is even negotiable.
That goes for anyone on the site.
PM if your area is not easy, or nice, with regards to obtaining parts.

They know who they are. Some have been mentioned here.

Hi Neil,

1. The pivot arms are crushed or crimped in my car.

2. It appears you have screws in the correct holes.

3. There are no re-in forcing brackets.

from your photos it appears you are missing a plastic piece that runs fore and aft perpendicular to the pivot bar. I will post a pic when it gets light here

Thanks Ben and also kahl again for the photos.

I had another look at the panel kahl to see if there is any evidence of a stiffener support having been removed, but can't see anything obvious. Maybe the 2000 never had one as Volvo cheap'd out. I think a run to pick-n-pull is on the cards once the temperature gets back above -15C!

I can see what looks like part of a center support in your 1'st picture kahl. It would be good to see the whole of that section. I will also have to look more closely at the rear panel to see if there have been any 'modifications' to that also.

Ben, you have to vent sometimes or you explode! These AWD P80's I have owned are the most ungrateful swines I have ever known. No sooner do I fix one thing and the next thing has already broken! Even if I figure out the squeaking, the *!$%^^ front suspension has started groaning again. I have removed the IPD sway-bar bushes and replaced them, re-greased to spec using their expensive Aqualube on 5 occasions now, and the best I have managed it 3-400km before it starts again. Really getting to the point of removing it altogether along with the IPD HD end links and tossing it away. I seem to have no luck with the newer IPD stuff. Most of it has caused me nothing but grief!

It is a good thing that the car is a spare, as next job is to remove the rear sub-frame to replace it as it has cracked from electrolytic corrosion. Really looking forward to that job, but then I suppose I can replace the weeping diff seals while in there!

To be honest, I have now gotten so p****d with Volvo in North America and their hide your head and the pain in the a$$ customer will go away attitude, after 40 years of Volvo ownership I am now planning to change brands. No issue with the dealer, just the manufacturer. Now have a Kia Optima and my daughters Saturn Aura in the drive. In fairness much newer but more reliable so far!

XC70 and V70R are on borrowed time!!

Ok, got that out of the system, so back to figuring the squeaking out tomorrow, and then probably the week after pulling the whole rear end and suspension out. Oh, joy!

Thanks guys,

Neil.

In my continued attempts to fix the elusive squeaks, I have taken a few more photos of the under-side of both the rear spare wheel covers. Please, if someone can take a look and compare to their car, and let me know if there is anything missing in the way of possibly a stiffener bar as has been suggested on the rear most one near the tailgate.

Both panels have some pre-drilled holes as if there were to be something else there, but they don't look like there has been. None of the holes that don't currently have threaded machine screws in them have threaded inserts with the exception of the 2 either end by the kink in the support bar.

Only thing I've been able to find is some of the machine screws being missing (and not just in my head!).

I hope to be able to get to pick-n-pull in a couple of days when the wind chill gets above -20C to have a look to see what I can find, but any help or advice is appreciated!

Thanks kahl! Much appreciated.

Looks like mine with no additional bracing. Someone mentioned their car had additional bracing, but perhaps it was an 850.

Might still take a run to p and p on Wednesday to have a look at what is there and if anything is different as currently they don't have a V70 newer than 98.

I will continue to play with the rear panels to see if I can resolve and update if I find a solution.
