XC90 Mystery Coolant Issue
XC90 Mystery Coolant Issue
My 2005 XC90 2.9 is using a ton of coolant; refilling every week. If the "low coolant" message wouldn't come on, I would not know there was an issue. Car runs fine (even in cold MN winter), no funky smells or smoke, temperature gauge is normal, never overheated, no check engine messages. Brought it to the dealer 4 times for this. The pressure test was fine 2 times. Nothing in the oil, no puddles under the car, no leaks detected when car is idle. They're not sure what's the matter. 60k miles (all city driving), no warranty, original owner...ideas?

Could it be collecting in your skid plate and not dripping out until your car is in motion? I had a v70 one time that had a tiny leak in the radiator that was unnoticable unless I left the car parked for a long period of time. The leak would just collect in the air dam and stay there until I moved the car.
Have the oil tested for coolant (NAPA has a kit you send away to a lab). Mine had the same problem and it was the oil pan mounted oil cooler. I replaced it and the coolant stopped dissapearing. Make sure you change your oil to get fresh oil in there if you find antifreeze in there.
