ETS light on and stays on but drives ok

Post by debb48 »

Hi My 1999 volvo ETS light came on yesterday and is staying on when I drive it. I have not noticed any changes in how it is driving though it occassionally stalls out when i am pulling out of a parking space and I turn the wheel too sharply. i haven't had any surges or stalling when driving on the road. My question is,,, can i still drive it this weekend until i can take it to a car repair shop on monday or will i being doing damage to the engine? thank you in advance for helping me out ...

If you don't notice any degradation in driving performance it could be as simple as a brake pedal position sensor or if you have current ETM software one of the position sensors could be worn or out of tolerance. When you have current (post 2006) software the car is not as likely to enter limp home mode.

Without performance symptoms it's not likely to do any harm as this means the engine is receiving correct air/fuel ratio.

The dealer will ask for big dollars for a new ETM so be aware of the aftermarket ETM repair services available.
All will be revealed by reading the codes 8-)

Cool let us all know how you went at the dealer. Did you check the independant mechanics' guide here at MVS? Someone may already know of an independent Volvo mechanic in your area.

So I took it in this and they are looking at it. They estimate to replace it if it needs s new ets it will be between 1000-1400 to replace it.does that sound right ? I didn't take it to a dealer but an independent Volvo repair shop

Run away.

The ETM costs about $550 (with markup), programming should be no more than $100 and labour on a non turbo is about 15 minutes if it has been removed before. If not add 25 minutes to release/refit starter bracket.

If it's a turbo labour should be about 2 hours maximum.

Just wondering how you went with that repairer. I hope you didn't take their offer and saved some money.

Let us all know if we can be of help.

Hi it turned out that the first mechanic there gave me the wrong estimate... It ended up costing 850 installed...they had my car for almost 3 days because volvo's site was down and they couldn't download the program after installing it...thank you so much for your advice and help!
