1998 V70xc Bluish white smoke when I open up throttle

Post by shiloh51933 »

I recently purchased another Volvo, a 1998V70xc to add to our small collection('04 XC70/'96 850). I got a sweet deal on her cause of a few minor issues(key was stuck in ignition/needed battery/bald front tires/oil filler cap needed new gasket). Anyway some lines/hoses near rad have oil seeping from them, they look like oil cooler lines and the turbo air intake tubing. The PCV system definitely need to be serviced. I put new double platinum spark plugs, Mobil1 5w30/Mobil 1 oil filter, new battery, front tires and I put some seafoam into the gas tank. It will blow smoke when I get on the throttle.

Deal with the PCV and it will likely clear up the smoking problem. If that doesn't clear things up then do a compression test. If you have low compression and smoking then it may be the piston rings.

I put some seafoam into the gas tank. It will blow smoke when I get on the throttle.

That will make smoke until the Seafoam is run through.
I enjoy the smoke while knowing it is harmless.
93 octane in the tank next fill.

It has an interesting smell as well. Somewhat sweet, with a texture of elderberry?

What brand spark plugs are those? In any case, these cars run best with OEM Volvo plugs.

The Volvo plugs for a turbo are single electrode, not double.

Collection is a nice way to explain it.
What color is yours, by the way?
I had added the same to my collection, hoarding? I don't know. I did not need another, but there seems to be an abundance of the '98 XC lately.

I believe this must be their time for passing from the pragmatic existence.
I am having fun with these cars at the moment.
They have inspired an old hobby, as well as a couple nice vehicles I am keeping all to myself.

Simply Bosch Super Copper for each. Gapped @ .026. Let them burn and replace.
When I say "replace", I have not had to even do that in the last four years. Re-gap may be a useful term.
The cars seem to love them.
In my experience so far.
Not expensive either, at around $2 EA.

To address the condition this thread calls for, bluish white may be a puff of oil coming from either the turbo, valve seals, other possibilities.
Was the engine idling for long, fully warmed to running temperature? these are considerations as well.

If you ask me 5w-30 is pretty thin oil for these cars and for climate you are in.

5 or 10w-40 should be used in these cars with a lot of mileage on the clock. In the other words...Synthetic 5w-40 for turbo and semi-synth 10w-40 for non turbo for moderate climate all year round.

That's what the factory specs call for, my understanding is double platinum means there's platinum on center and ground electrode. My factory Volvo plugs for my n/a 850GLT have 3 side electrodes and all spark plugs have a center electrode/side electrode...so I'm confused about your statement that turbo Volvo plugs have single electrode.
