Sure, there are ways to test the head.

So where are you thinking the problem is in the head, that matches the symptoms here? And would be picked up by a leakdown. I'm just not seeing it. You will recall OP already has good compression numbers.

For posterity's sake, or redundancy's, here are warm compression numbers with WOT. 130, 130, 136, 132, 127.

I had the pleasure of speaking to a retired gentleman tonight who works on cars on the side now. He spent thirty years as a tech at a local luxury dealership servicing Benz, Jaguar, Rover, Porsche, etc, no Volvo though. He is a wealth of knowledge, and is 99% convinced that this is nothing more than a vacuum leak leaning the 5 cylinder. He's agreed to help me locate the issue and take it on as a team early next week. I'm looking forward to working with this fella.

As for the European shop that said I needed a new head, I think I'm done with them. Upon deciding to do a proper compression test tonight, I became increasingly suspicious. I have one spark plug cover bolt that's slightly stripped. And lo and behold, its in the exact same hole that I put it in Saturday. One in six chance, I guess. Hmm.

An update on an old topic. Sorry for reviving it. I got busy with stuff and forgot to report. It was a torn intake manifold gasket. Just like Volvofan94's. Same place and everything. Problem solved. Thanks for the help everyone. Now to find that 143 problem.

Thanks for posting. Just seemed no way this was a head problem, good to see that confirmed.
