I am looking at options to replace broken remote controls for our 2000 S70. The remotes are the four-button type, PN 9166200, and have one red "panic" button.
Called a Volvo dealer, and they said any remote that had previously been programmed could NOT be reprogrammed for my car & I have to buy a new remote for about $170, plus $60 for software and $40 for programming time, bringing the total cost up over $270. Searched on-line where opinions differ and a used remote could be reprogrammed up to the year 2000.
Who's right? Can the old one be reprogrammed or not?
Is this reprogramming an option among dealers where some who will accommodate you & others who want the additional parts sale?
I looked in prior threads & found some say "yes" it can be done and others say "no" it can't - has anyone actually tried/been able to get a used remote reprogrammed without the original UPC info?

Starting in '99 the remotes are not re-programmable unless you happen to have the original label that came with the remote package. In the case of an original remote the label wasn't anything that was included with the purchase documents. The label has the programming code for that specific remote control.
What is "broken" on yours? If it is the cases or the buttons then you can buy used controls and swap your guts into the replacement cases and the programming won't change. Beyond that, the obscene dealer charges are your only option.

We bought the car with two remotes, one never worked and the other stopped working a year later (3-4 years ago). I actually changed the skin as the shell was broken on the one that was working but then it quit shortly there after.
I also considered if it was possible to get a junk yard remotes with a receiver from inside the car.
Or an aftermarket remote control with remote start, like a Bulldog system. Any thoughts on these ideas?

I don't know if getting the VGLA module and its already mated remotes will work or not. I have actually thought about trying that with the module and remote from my parts car. I may try it anyway since I need to replace the lamps on the instrument cluster and the VGLA module is right there.
The way the CAN bus programming works on the later model cars I am not optimistic though due to the way that the software works. The software download to mate the remotes basically recompiles all of the related systems including the immobilizer function that is mated with the key(s) and their specific codes.
