1999 S70 Did I just get ripped off?

I don't think so. Is the price high for a 99? To me it depends on maintenance and how the car has been looked after.

If there is some for of maintenance history then you can feel better that the car has been 'babied'.
Recently a 1997 850 with about the same mileage went up for sale here in Calgary, and it was priced at over $7000. It sold in days. A 2000 V70R with 190kkm went on for $7500 and sold almost straight away. Having said that, I met someone who bought a 2000 R similar to mine with only 120kkm on it and spent over $6500 almost straight away. Car hadn't been serviced (body was in great shape), but the 5 speed auto (known problem area) failed, along with various other age related stuff (vacuum pipes).

For that money, there are lots of newer Volvos on sale over here at around that price, but they have over 200kkm on them.

So if you have a good car, can find where it was serviced or have a recent service history then I think it is a good buy. No AWD to go wrong or Turbo issues. As stated earlier buy others, check the timing belt has been done recently and the serpentine belt, then I would consider a Stage 0 service then you know where you are on maintenance.

For that price you may have overpaid a smidge or you may have executed a very fair deal or come out ahead on it. I agree with scot850, check it out, make sure it is up to maintenance, and enjoy it.

You made a fine deal. Give yourself a pat on the back.
I will replace all fluids, filters and common seals ASAP.
Focus on achieving Stage 0.
It can take you to places for another 200,000 miles.

Is there a way to check the timing belt easily, or will I have to take it to my mechanic? By the way, I have an awesome mechanic who used to own a Volvo, so I have some great support with him.

You could measure how much slack the timing belt has. That would give some indication wether or not it is in good shape. Visually you can only check so much which still is not good enough.

At the end of the day just replace the t-belt, tensioner and rollers. Spending some money versus "loosing" all your money because the engine eats itself should make this an easy decision.
