I am considering the purchase of a 2001 S60 as a car for my son. I have three other Volvos, all 2000 and older and have been pleased with their reliability. I have heard some 2001-03 Volvos have transmission issues and I was not sure if the S60's were included in this. Also what other issues might we be looking at .
I have a 1998 V70 my oldest son drives and its getting ready to turn 200,000 mi, so I am not afraid of high miles, but I don't want to buy a money pit either.

Unless if you get one with a manual transmission I'd personally avoid any 2001-2003 5 speed auto Volvo, just do a simple Google search for those model years and you will find tons of results of transmission shift flares, slipping, and just complete transmission failure

In what I've found and read the 2003 seems to be exempt from the problems. The 2003 MY had a revised valve body with a different part number to 2001 & 2002 models.
