Gauge is probably fine but doesn't hurt to check. Cranked until the needle stops moving?

For checking the timing, look at the timing belt tutorials. Robert must have videos about it if you want to see it that way. Basically you want to raise the car on jackstands, remove the passenger wheel and put the crank on the mark, and then check the position of the cams. Are the cams on their marks, or off by a few teeth? Once the crank is on the mark it will be crystal clear where the timing is, by looking at the timing marks on the front cam gears and/or the slots on the back of the cams. Post up a pic if you are wondering about how to read the cams.
Thanks for this info. Of course all things I've read. I will take sometime tonight or tomorrow. I'll post up a pic.

So I aligned the cam and it looks as if one is off by one tooth.

Was the crank on the mark when you took those pics? The crank must be on the mark.

If it is, there is nothing of any consequence wrong with the timing. Certainly nothing that would cause any trouble at all with the valves.

Well now that's a good question! I was so disappointed when they didn't line up I forgot all about that part. Well I will check that tomorrow.

Ok guys. I've started the tear down of the head....wowzers! Not hard just hope I remember where all this stuff goes.
Question for you. I'm not sure the timing is aligned right? Here is a picture. I don't want to screw this up. How do I get the belts off and do I need to take the serpentine belt off. Timing belt i figure that one.
The little colored mark is the timing mark line.

Why are you trying to "tear" the head down? What instructions are you using?

0 compression in 4. Burnt valve? Bent valve? I'm investigation the root cause. Timing seems off a bit but I want to set this for sure before I move any further.
